After a neigh of thanks, Estella timidly stepped into the water. She crossed it. On the opposite bank, she stood flicking water droplets off the tip of her tail, uncertain of where next to go.

Lonan lifted his head sharply as the scent of cougar reached his flared nostrils. He snorted, leapt into a gallop and tore off towards where the smell was coming from. His hooves thundered. In minutes, he found Pantha and came to an abrupt halt beside the pinto stallion. He reared wildly, snorting and shaking hs head.

Pantha saw Neero fighting viciously, he neighed and charged towards the cougar. Running Water ran off towards the rest of the herd.

Tradick reared, and stomped his hooves. He shook his mane, snorting loudly.

Pantha! Pantha! He whinnied.

Pantha was scared and angry at the same time, he reared and fell down on the cougar. The cougar spat and hissed, it clawed at Pantha's legs.

Running to Pantha's aid, Tradick hit the cougar full in the face with his back hooves. Then whinnying in anger he chased it off. Elf, the daughter of Pantha saw what had happened and galloped up to her father.

'Father! Father!' She snickered.'Are you hurt, dear father?'

Meanwhile, Oatis, the omega of the herd, was creeping through the tall lush grass, he was working his way closer and closer towards his sleeping mate and foal. Oh, how he hoped Lonan was not around to scare him off. Oh, how he wished to see his mate and baby for a while!

Pantha breathed heavily then nickered back'' I'm fine thank you, Evie. Could you check on the herd for me please? I need to take care of a few things.''

'Mmhhmm,' said Elf, nodding her head.


Oatis glowed with proudness as he caught sight of his little son, Toast. The foal was growing up handsomely! He snickered to his mate and foal.

Tradick, meanwhile, had frightened the cougar away. Shaking his messy mane he turned to return to the herd, but something made him stop. He could hear a voice somewhere...

Maisy, mother of Oatis's son Toast, fondled the tiny amount of hair which grew down her newborn's neck - and she wondered over the huge forelock that covered his eyes completely! Never had she seen such growth on a newborn foal.

Toast was strong. He had managed to get to his feet, slowly, but without falling over once. He now stood at his mother's shoulder, looking about him and snorting every now and again.

*Weeks later*


Lonan, the blood bay stallion and ''Segundo de a Bordo'' (Spanish for second-in-command) of the Panthera Herd, crept through a large area of wooded territory, tail whisking from side-to-side to ward off the many flies that zipped around him. His expression was set - very determined it was. His rather large and dark hooves made the smallest of sounds as he walked.

After him, another horse - a foal, a colt, actually - trotted even more quietly. He was a little buckskin, with Bend-Or spots dappling his rump. His forelock comically covered his eyes entirely, much like the way a Shetland's does, only more. It was thick forelock, black and thick. The colt kept about seven metres behind Lonan all the way through the trees; and whenever Lonan stopped, so did the colt; when Lonan moved off again, the colt did so too.
