I'm not so sure where to start here.

Firstly, is Spirit a buckskin or a bay dun. The only reason I am confused here is because Esperanza is a Palomino, which is single creme on red, and buckskin is single creme on bay. So if Spirit's father was a bay, Spirit could be buckskin. But if Spirit's father was something else like bay dun, erm... yeah.

Secondly. Rain's paint coloring, would I be right in guessing that it's something like bay sabino?

This is just so I can sort of make a fanbaby up.

I try not to think about it too hard, but I just consider Spirit a Dun because of his Dorsal stripe.

Dreamworks designers based Spirit's design off of a Kiger mustang named Donner, according to the newspaper article I have form when the film was released. Donner is a dun, as the dorsal stripe is present. DOrsal stripes and leg bands are primitive markings, relating back to the original Spanish horses brought over in the 17th century. I always figured Rain was a simple pinto / paint.

No need to speculate Spirit for I think Koeyohte answered rather well.

Rain isn't Sabino by my observation. Sabino "roans" around the edges of the color. You can read up about sabino coloring here.

It would be my best bet to say that Rain is a Tabiano -- which is a dominant gene (T).

"All four legs may be white, at least below the hocks and knees. Body markings will usually be regular and distinct, often being oval or round patterns that extend down over the neck and chest giving the appearance of a shield. The Tobiano Paint will usually have the dark colour in one or both flanks. The Tobiano may either be predominantly dark or white."

For Sabino:

"It may have white flecking through its coat and the edges of its white markings may be speckled or broken."

I was speaking color genetics, not breed... "paint" and "pinto" don't really describe their markings and stuff as accurately.
