This is something that has been driving me absolutely insane the last few days and I wanted to put it out there. Now I know that not everyone is an English major, and not everyone here even has English as a first language so I don't care if people use perfect grammar (my sentence structure is a disaster sometimes).

But lately I've noticed a TON of spelling mistakes on this board, and in 2010 there really isn't an excuse for that. Unless you have a MAC, you probably have Firefox (and if you don't, you should get it because it's a great browser). Assuming that most of the people on this site are using Firefox, I want to point out that it has a built in spell checker. When you misspell a word, it underlines it for you in a red line and all you need to do is right click and fix it.

If for some reason you're using Internet Explorer, there are many tool bars out there that will spell check for you. Or you could just copy and paste your post into Microsoft Word (Especially when you're starting a new topic or making a long post).

This is NOT at attack on people who frequently make spelling mistakes. I make them all the time, but you wouldn't know it because I use a spell checker. PLEASE take the extra 2 seconds to spell check your posts. It makes the site look better, it makes you look better and everyone will take your posts much more seriously.

Oh dear god this.
I just hate it when people can't use proper grammar, or just check their posts in case of spelling errors.

For myself, my native language isn't English, and thats why it's so hard for me to understand someone not using the proper grammar.

But yeah, I recommend people to use browsers with spell-check, like Opera or Firefox.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that hates this, lol. And when people don't use proper grammar - especially when they ARE from the US and that is very clearly taught in school. Really, when I read a post with a ton of spelling/grammar mistakes my first thought is "Well someone didn't get past fourth grade."

My Firefox is not working right now, and I'm not the best speller in the world. So if I know there's a word I misspelled I take that extra five seconds to copy/paste into Microsoft Word to see the errors and correct them.

I'm not the words best speller, but I know what you mean. Some of the most of simple of words are spelled wrong. I've seen "program" spelled wrong on THIS site...I think the main problem is that people are too lazy to even bother to fix their mistakes, or they just care what-so-ever. Spell-check is there for a reason people, USE IT! It's there to HELP you, not to annoy you to no end.

For the most part I use Firefox, but right now I'm using Safari. Safari also has spell-check. I believe Internet explorer 8 has spell-check, but I wouldn't know. I once in a blue moon use it. If not, for peace sake, download Firefox, or use word, or whatever word processing program you might have.

Thank you! People who typo constantly always annoy me. Like everyone else is saying, there is a spellchecker, please use it!

I'll admit, I have my typo moments, but before I go straight to spell-checking myself, I try spelling it on my own to further my own spelling skills to see if I can get it right. If I can't, then I use the spellchecker. Thus, I'm teaching myself to not typo. I recommend this method to everyone, but that's not the point. Spell check exists. Learn from it when you use it.

As much as I value proper English and despise butchered language with the intensity of a thousand suns, one has to remember its not just this site xD It's the internet. It's the world.

I'm on board with this rant. Bad spelling and grammar are pet peeves of mine. Everything has a built in spell checker, there's no real excuse for it.

I agree. English is not my first, or second language. But I (living in Sweden) get English lessons as the other Scandinavian countries. I am self taught when it comes to words that are considered "unnecessary" in school I do misspell occasionally. But you don't really notice sense I run harder words through a dictionary. Spellcheckers are the ultimate solution, but I have yet to get one. People should really care more about their spelling, etc, but you can't really blame kids for not getting it right, sense they don't really think about it.

Yeah, this is starting to get annoying. Is there any way at all that the moderators can correct the spelling on the topics so we don't have these misspelled annoyances.

Just one side note to the OC: Mac's can have Firefox as well, which means they have spellcheck too (v2.0 and above). And, as MB said earlier, Safari also has it.

In the end, since a spellchecking browser is available for all platforms, that means that there is absolutely no excuse for poor spelling in topic titles.

I think the same with this one. I mean, even if you don't have a spell checking browser, people should be smart enough to realize about ten mistakes in one sentence. One or two isn't that bad, but if you're whole entire paragraph or everything you say is out of order or in bad grammar, shouldn't you be able to tell?

I know I would. I used to have a lot of trouble with the words that have 'ely' at the end because I was never sure if it was that or 'ley' like:
Descriptivley.
Descriptively

I used to always stare at the words (whether they were right or wrong) wondering how to spell the last parts, but now that I have firefox, it's made my life so much easier XD

Indeed. This again. :|

Well, people have talked about this on this site ad nauseum. And I find myself totally siding with those who are flabberghasted by the lack of ability of native English speakers. I cannot fault those for whom English is not a primary language. They deserve a little more leeway I think.

And then there is the whole "Alue" thing. If that doesn't drive anyone totally insane with utter shock and frustration, at how anyone cannot possibly figure out how to spell that correctly...one little four-letter word...then there is little hope for our species. With the prevalence of Aleu's name appearing in print on this site, NOT A SINGLE PERSON - regardless of age or nationality - has any excuse to spell that name wrong. Not one.

These things are, of course, indicative of a larger problem, recently written up in the magazine Philadelphia (a local magazine sold in the Philadelphia, PA region). The article examines modern teens from all angles...their environment; their capacity to learn based upon brain development (which hasn't changed for thousands of years); the way modern media and electronics have begun to alter the perception of our species, and how we take in information; etc. And the article will SEEM to, at times, defend and excuse teens for what they do and their "dumbing down". But make no mistakes...as the article wraps, it concludes that it is still a shared fault - teens themselves, educators, the media, and technology (and maybe, to a small extent, those parents who treat their kids like their best friends rather than their KIDS). The obvious conclusion? With kids having access to instantaneous information through advanced technology; through the barrage of high-speed media and entertainment; through the lack of attention of schools in teaching reading and writing; and with some parents being too ignorant of their kids' doings - or their desire to treat their kids as equals rather than the subordinate dependents they ARE, kids are generally lazier today, with much shorter attention spans, and with expectations of instant gratification rather than being able to understand the necessity of working to achieve a goal (and the possibility of not achieving that goal...since, in this politically-correct world, no one is ever saddled with having to face failure or criticism. Goshness, that would hurt their feelings!).

The link to the online version of the article is pasted in below. It's a GOOD read, and I have been DYING to post it on this site, and was just waiting for a good opportunity! However, at nine electronic pages in length (it was rather shorter in the printed version of the magazine), it is telling that most teens and young adults probably won't get through it all the way, because they lack the patience and the ability to sit and read through something more than a paragraph in length. ROFL Tsk.

Like what Cat said before it's everywhere XD This occurs online mostly because people don't care how bad they type since some think it doesn't matter

But I can't say I haven't typed, and not had mistakes everywhere.

I would argue that every effort at correctness in spelling and grammar matters. Where did this "it doesn't matter because it's the internet" thing come from?? (Oh, wait. Right. "it dont matter cuz itz da interwebs". )

Not digging at you personally, but REALLY...that excuse is the lamest tripe to ever become a standard of lazy, procrastinatory indifference I have ever seen.

Acknowledged. But it would seem to me that that "some" is a far greater percentage than you may think.
