As a writer, I agree with Acanis that having Steele die would have raised the movie's rating, which would be regrettable since Balto was always meant to be for families. While I think Steele gets a little too much love from some people *coughJennaSteeleshipperscough*, I agree that he was certainly a well-made character, and having him die would have killed off some great creative possibilities for the viewers. As a writer, I can readily sympathize with the wish to not kill him off; I recently had a similar struggle with one of my own villains.
