We all know that Duke's plane crashed during the movie, but I just want to clarify why did it crash? What kind of failure happened? Did it crash because of mechanical failure? Because of Human error? Or because of an outside cause; (such as bird strikes, heavy snowfall, powerful winds, updrafts, etc.) Because as I recall, before Duke took off, he cleaned out the ice on his plane, as a safety precaution so that his plane won't crash. So what happened? Why did it still crash?

XD Nice reason, but any specifics? Such as Rudder hard-over, the freezing of flight control systems, power failure, engine failure, fuel freezing, and such. Or any other opinion or explanation on how the plane crashed, and why Duke did not have a parachute, or almost not able to react to the incident? He could at least tried to jump out, or send a distress signal, etc.

The plane probably crashed due to the engine freezing. Or the plane was building up too much ice weighing it down. Okay, mighty. Ummm yeah... in those days, planes did not have de-icing systems. Which makes Duke's plane more likely to accumulate ice, especially in the wings.

JC, those are just some explanations. What I really want to know is the real explanation, if anybody knows it. I want to gain a better insight about this, that is why I asked it.

This also raises more question, on why didn't Duke react? For example, he could have tried to jump out, left a flare, sent a distress signal or something. But why didn't he?
