{POLL} To change or not to change? | Tweet |
Within the last few days that Minions Source has been open to the public, the question of changing the site name to "Despicable Me Source" has been discussed behind the scenes to avoid any confusion, but was decided to leave it as "Minions." However, a user recently mentioned that they feel the site should focus on the Despicable Me films, rather than on the Minions themselves. I don't have a problem with changing the name, but I want to ask for some insight on what everyone else thinks about this before I make a final decision.
NOTE: If I'm to update the name on the banner, the URL of the site will remain the same. Changing the name of a site, according to Steet, is nearly impossible to do.

Because, Eztia, as explained earlier, the current movie in theaters is
"Minions". Not "Despicable Me". There may be people who don't know
the Despicable Me movies, believe it or not. Or they may be searching
the internet for "minions", or information on that movie in
particular. Since it is the most recent in the franchise, we wanted
to go with the most current name. |

I think it's more judicious to put "Despicable Me Source" than
"Minions Source" because Minions come from despicable me. If we do a
minions source, why don't you do a Bartok source? For me it's logic. |

I don't believe that it's impossible for information to be transferred
from one site to another. At least it works that way when someone
wants to import content from the French side to the English side.
Whether or not that would work on two unrelated sites, I don't know.
But I would imagine I would have to re-upload ALL of the image and
re-enter the CSS color codes, and I'm not up for that. And really, I
think that would be more of a last resort. One other suggestion I can make, even though the URL would still be wrong, is to change were it says "Minions Source" on the tab to "Despicable Me Source." That can be changed in the site panel under the "edit the basic site information." (I would still have to change the banner name, which isn't a problem) The last thing I can think of is to run a trial on my suggestion for a week or so. If people don't like it, we can revert back and just accept the name, or take it back to the drawing board. |

We'll all figure something out. In the grand scheme, it depends upon
how big a deal it is for the members overall. At least the ones who
care about, or are interested in, this source and the movies. But yes, I also hope this is the very last issue to deal with. Because Mighty, Legolas and I certainly didn't put in all the work and dedication to it just to see one issue after another crop up. We want to see this source succeed. And these issues are exasperating. Maybe someone's going to say that sounds selfish. But Somes, as a site builder yourself, you can imagine how we feel. We dedicated a lot of our time, passion and labor in seeing this source come to fruition. By now, we had hoped and expected that people would be enjoying it and posting great comments and fan creations. We didn't anticipate what we have encountered thus far. It's disheartening. |

Well another thing to consider is that Steet could potentially make a
Despicable Me Source and literally copy everything from Minions to
Despicable Me. One of the problems with that is the longer you wait,
the more content you have to migrate, which leads to more potential
for lost data. Besides that, although it'd be easy copy/paste
everything, it'd still be an incredible pain in the neck. I just hope this is the last bump in the road for this source. I'd hate to see more drastic changes to the appearance to this source at such a young age! |

Thank you for your thoughts, Somes. (Actually, though, steet
initially asked me why we weren't going with "Despicable Me Source"
instead of "Minions Source". My explanation was pretty much what I
noted in my comment down below. Which he accepted.) But I think we may have to face this around the time the third Despicable Me movie comes out, in 2017. I just think it's going to be inevitable. Perhaps by then steet will have come up with a way of pulling it off. I guess, if we had known at the time there were going to be more Despicable Me titles being made, we might have taken a different course. But there was nothing that I could find at the time to suggest another was coming. To all appearances, Minions seemed like it was going to be the last one. Still, every bit of constructive feedback is welcome! |

Thanks for your feedback, Somes! I do understand your concern with
confusing people with a conflicting URL (which was a concern of mine
too). |

Changing the name won't really matter since both Despicable Me and
Minions are in the same series, and is a personal preference for the
admins. Personally, the url would be bothersome to me if it were different from the banner. I feel that way because whenever I come to visit a particular source I usually just type in the source name behind www.animationsource.org/ If we were to change the website officially to Despicable Me Source from Minions Source, it might cause some confusion to potential new members who are a part of the Despicable Me/Minions fandom. Then again, it's not really that confusing. |

Well, as I had explained to a member who had asked the question about
this: "We talked about that at length, and we do agree with you to a point (even steet had a very relevant opinion on this). In the end, we wanted to go with name recognition. And the latest movie is Minions. So people are currently identifying with that. Of course, there is word that a third Despicable Me movie is due in 2017 (and will probably be a tying together of Minions and the first Despicable Me, I would imagine...showing the minions meeting and going to work for Gru). "This is basically social media marketing. We're using the most current movie name, and all the recognition it's currently getting, as a way of springboarding and drawing attention to the source. Of course, we will definitely take your thoughts into account, and maybe see if there's anything we can do to change it before Despicable Me 3 comes out!" We're not remiss to changing it, perhaps sometime after Minions is out of the theaters, but we definitely will be unable to change the site URL. As Mighty indicated, steet has told us that this is practically impossible to do once the matter is initially set. As long as everyone can live with the dichotomy which would result, then we certainly don't have a problem with changing it. And it's been on my mind as a possibility anyway... |
