After a month of no updates, we finally have stuff to talk about. This weekend, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return arrived in about 2,500 theaters in North America. Unfortunately, it only gathered about $3.7 million over the weekend. For a release that wide, it's among the worst openings ever. In fact, it's the 7th-worst for any film that opened over 2,500 theaters. At this point, this film will be lucky to end its run over $10 million, which would make it an all-out box office flop against a budget of $70 million. (The 15% rating on RottenTomatoes.com doesn't help.)
In contrast, Rio 2 survived two spots higher up on the list, coming in at 6th for the weekend with just over $5 million. The animated sequel has, to date, earned $113 million domestically and $422.6 million worldwide. Compare that with Rio's gross of $115.2 million domestically at the same point in its run, and that tells that Rio 2 will probably wind up slightly lower than its predecessor. On the other hand, the first film ended its run with $484.6 million worldwide, which took several months to reach, so on the worldwide view, at least, Rio 2 will beat it out.

Nothing else on the domestic level came high enough to be counted. However, Frozen continued its winning streak in Japan, topping their box office for the ninth-straight weekend. This hasn't happened in Japan since Avatar in 2010, and Frozen is now the sixth highest-grossing film of all time over there. To date, the animated blockbuster giant (behemoth, really) has grossed $1.19 billion worldwide. It is now guaranteed to pass Iron Man 3 to become the highest-grossing film of 2013 and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time. The last time an animated film has held that distinction was when The Lion King reached #4 in 1994. (A full list of Frozen's records at the box office can be found here.)
The next animated film release will be How to Train Your Dragon 2 on June 13. Expect a huge opening weekend. All box office information taken from BoxOfficeMojo.com

Pandora -- I think it's because Legends of Oz thinks it can be a
sequel to a very well known movie from the 1930's and 'pick up' where
it left off. Yeah, no. |
