Rio 2 was released in American theaters this weekend and managed to top Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Friday. But it was not to last, and ultimately, it ended the weekend about $2 million short of 1st Place. Altogether, it managed a solid $39 million from its opening weekend. That's almost identical to its predecessor, which racked up $39.2 million. Considering it had solid competition this itme around, that makes its intake even more impressive. Combined with a foreign total of $125 million, Rio 2 has now earned $164.2 million worldwide. This means it's on track to easily pass Rio.

Unfortunately, the only other animated film in the Top 10 was Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which stood in 10th Place with $1.8 million. Its domestic total now is hovering at around $105 million, which is pretty solid all things cnosidering. Worldwide, it is at $241 million. Against a $145 million budget, it should eventually make enough to cover its costs, so this film can be considered a success.
The other animated films in theaters this weekend were The Lego Movie (in 15th Place and earning $460,000) and Frozen (in 17th Place and earning $372,000). The Lego Movie is set to end its run in two or three weeks, and will ultimately finish at $255 million domestically/$450 million worldwide. Remember, it is currently the highest-grossing film of 2014, but this will undoubtedly change next week when it gets overtaken by Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Frozen's domestic total is now just shy of $400 million. It will reach that point, but it will still take another two or three weeks, and Disney has made it clear that Frozen will stay in at least a few theaters in the US all the way until June. Worldwide, it passed 007 film Skyfall to become the 8th highest-grossing film of all time this weekend. It will pass The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King next weekend to become #7. Beyond that, it will easily pass Transformers: Dark of the Moon, but the ultimate question will be whether it can pass Iron Man 3 to reach #5 of all time (Iron Man 3 currently sits at a hefty $1.21 billion). That will be the highest Frozen could possibly reach, and only time will tell if it can. For now, though, expect it to finish at least at #6.

I want to see Rio 2 but then again I'm a tad disappointed in what I
saw in the trailers. It seems like another one of those "Ex randomly
shows up who is fabulous and then husband gets really jealous"
cliches. Also, it doesn't make much sense because birds mate for life
so Jewel, in all reality, wouldn't have an ex. I bring this up because
this movie is suppose to be about a REAL endangered species and is
suppose to be somewhat realistic. Bruno Mars honestly shouldn't be in this movie. I feel like that was a poor selection on their choice to add him. I'll probably go see this movie just because it's Rio 2 and I love parrot movies, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. |
