Animation at the Box Office - Feb 21-23 | Tweet |

The Lego Movie has dominated the box office once again! It was at the #1 spot for the third weekend in a row, raking in an impressive $31.5 million. To date, the animated hit has earned $183 million domestically and $234 million worldwide. Combined with the recent announcement that it will receive a sequel in 2017, The Lego Movie is on track to be one of the highest-grossing February releases of all time!
Frozen had a good weekend as well. It retained its 8th Place hold from last weekend, and earned about $4.5 million domestically. Considering it is in its 10th weekend of wide release, that's quite the accomplishment. Domestically, Frozen is now the third highest-grossing film of the year, at $384 million. (Behind only The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Iron Man 3.)

Frozen's worldwide gross this weekend marked its final non-billion dollar gross at $980 million. It has yet to open in Japan, one of its largest foreign markets. On top of this, next Sunday is the Academy Awards, and people will undoubtedly flock back to the theaters to see Frozen in the event it wins one or both of its Oscars. (Our bets are it will.) By this time next weekend, Frozen will be past the coveted billion-dollar mark worldwide. To put this in perspective, only 14 other films have done this to date, and only one of them (Toy Story 3) was animated. This is by far the biggest success Disney has had since The Lion King, and it's only getting more and more successful!
Finally, The Nut Job earned $1 million domestically this past weekend. Last week, I erroneously reported a $150 million budget; the correct budget is $42 million. Even so, in order for films to "break even", they have to earn twice their budget (to make up for marketting and contracts and the like). Considering this film hasn't earned $65 million worldwide (or even $60 million domestically), it still has a long way to go in order to break even, and even then, it won't make any money.
Next week, I'll have two news stories for you: the usual weekly box office update, plus a special news about which animated films performed great at the Oscars. (Remember, outside of the Best Animated Film category, Frozen and Despicable Me 2 are nominated for Best Song, and fan favorite Get a Horse! is nominated for Best Animated Short Film.)
