Animation at the Box Office - March 14-16 | Tweet |
First of all, my apologies for not posting this news last week. I was on Spring Break. But there wasn't much you missed, so let's just jump in to this weekend.

In its second weekend of release, Mr. Peabody and Sherman rose from 2nd to 1st Place, which made it the highest-grossing film at the United States box office this weekend. (It has been in release overseas for several weeks already, and has done very well.) It earned an estimated $21 million domestically which, combined with its $32 million from last weekend and its gross over the past week, puts it at $63 million total so far. That's not too bad for an original DreamWorks film (though not on par with, say, How to Train Your Dragon), and it looks likely that it will end its domestic run at around $150 million .So far, it has grossed about that much worldwide, against a $145 million budget; it will probably break even and then some, which is quite the nice change for DreamWorks, which has had to resort to sequels and series films in recent history as their big money-earner.
The Lego Movie dived down to 6th Place, earning about $7.7 million. Considering it's the film's 5th weekend in theaters, that's not too bad, but the competition from other family films is beginning to show. (In comparison, Frozen was still in the Top 5 in its 5th weekend of release and grossed over $15 million.) So far, the animated hit has earned $236 million in the US and $378 million worldwide. It should definitely hit $300 million domestically and $500 million worldwide by the end of its run, and so far, it is the highest-grossing film of 2014.

Frozen managed to stay in the Top 10 for its 17th weekend in theaters, which no film has done since Titanic in 1998. Its 9th Place finish gave it another $2.1 million domestically. It also released in Japan this weekend--its final international market--but those numbers are not yet available. (Usually, Japanese box office numbers are released a week or two after.) However, numbers for other countries are in, and Frozen is currently stitting as the 15th highest-grossing film of all time. If it is as huge of a hit in Japan as it has been in all other countries (analysts currently predict it to end its run at around $50 million USD there), then it will definitely pass Toy Story 3 to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Expect it to end its run within the Top 10 highest-grossing films ever.(Currently sitting at $396 million domestically and $1.026 billion worldwide.)

The Nut Job and The Wind Rises both grossed too little to be included in the Top 20 at the box office. They earned about the same amount: around $450,000. (That's less than half a million.) This is understandable as they both are being shown at under 500 theaters now. Beginning next weekend, I won't be covering these films. In total, The Nut Job has earned just over $67 million worldwide, which makes it a box office flop. The Wind Rises, in comparison, has earned over $116 million worldwide, which makes it the 8th highest-grossing anime film in history.

Saw Peabody and Sherman at a screening. It was pretty cute, not
something I would've seen on my own though. As a history nerd it did
hit the right humor spots. As for The Nut Job and The Wind Rises, only one of these movies I really want to see. I'm a Ghibli loyalist and the fact it's a historically based film makes it even better. I was kinda disappointed in Poppy Hill but I'm hoping Miyazaki will go out with a bang on this one. The Nut Job just looks god awful from the commercials alone and I"m astounded it's getting a sequel considering it's a box office disaster. |

For a movie deemed a flop, I'm surprised that The Nut Job is getting a
sequel. O_O |
