Hello :D
We all know Tramp is a mutt, right? Right? Wrong. Not all of us know that. MOST of us do.
And has anyone ever wondered what Tramps breed is? Well, this article here, is for ye.
We'll go by size first, then colouring, then looks, and finally, personality.
So. Tramp is bigger than Lady, but smaller than Trusty. Lady is a Cocker Spaniel, and Trusty is a bloodhound.
So we'll look for dog breeds bigger than Cocker Spaniels and Smaller than Bloodhounds.
First, we need to know the sizes of the two breeds I just mentioned. Let's see.
Cocker Spaniel; Dog - 39-40 cm; Bitch - 38-39 cm. So Lady would be around 38-39 cm.
Bloodhound; Dog - 63-69 cm; Bitch - 58-63 cm. Trusty would be 63-69 cm.
So to find out what breeds Tramp might have had in himself, or what breed he was, we need to first find a dog sized bigger than 38 cm and smaller than 69 cm. He couldn't be a Lurcher, for Lurchers are 71-76 cm. He couldn't be a Lowchen, for these are 25 cm. Let's make a list of breeds available in size...
Chow Chow, Foxhound, Otterhound, Elkhound, Basenji, Suomenpystykorva, Samoyed, Siberian Husky, Whippet, Pharaoh Hound, Kelpie, Norwegian Buhund(Norwegian Sheepdog), Australian Cattle Dog, Border Collie, French Briard, Dutch Shepherd Dog, Polish Lowland Sheepdog... There sure is a lot. Let's just stick with these.
Now the breeds we will use for this article are; Elkhound, Siberian Husky, Kelpie, Australian Cattle Dog, French Briard, Otterhound and Dutch Shepherd Dog.
Let's have a look at this picture of Tramp first.
Notice his looks, his colouring, and the wide smile.

Now... His colour is a brown-grey like colour... Let's call it our "Balto" colour.
Now the dog breeds we chose to use; Let's see what colours they can have.
Elkhound; Can be grey and can be black. Now - A grey elkhound size would be 52 cm for a dog and 49 cm for a bitch. A black elkhound would be just a little less. We'll keep this breed for our article.
Siberian Husky; The husky can have any type of colour with markings on the face. We would keep the husky, too. For it seems like Balto from Balto was half husky, it seems like they kinda based Balto's colours from Tramp. Plus they both have similar markings on the face. That is why we're keeping this husky breed.
Kelpie; Black, red or chocolate. Nah; Tramp ain't any of these. However his size looks like a Kelpie, he ain't a Kelpie. We won't keep this breed.
Australian Cattle Dog; Red or Blue(Grey-like) fur with spots. Once again, good size, but the colours made it worse. Ain't keeping this-a-one either.
French Briard; Black, Grey, Blue or Fawn. Here we have the right colouring. We'll keep this breed, however, it's almost impossible for it to stay 'till the end of the article.
Otterhound; Fawn or Grey, with bits of black or red. Well, don't ye think grey and fawn together makes that brown-grey like colour Tramp has? We'll keep this-a-one.
And the last one, Dutch Shepherd Dog; Yellowish, Fawn or red. Let's keep this-a-one and see.
Now for the looks!
Elkhound; Ears are triangular, the tail is fat, hairy and curled up on the back, eyes are oval, dark brown and medium-sized. So this means Tramp wouldn't be an Elkhound... Unless he got his colours from one. His eyes are dark brown, and he is a type of a grey-like dog. The Elkhound has a short body, however Tramp seems to have a... medium-sized, maybe. Gotta keep this breed? Yes, of course. Let's keep it.
Husky; Muscular body. Long snout/muzzle. Eyes are almond-shaped, can be brown or blue. Ears are high up, pretty close to each other. Very furry tail. Tramp's eye colour fits, and his ears are high up. Let's keep this breed and see.
French Briard; Usually the ears are high up, very muscular body. Eyes are big, round and dark. Long fur. LONG FUR! Tramp has short fur! Short fur, however the ears are high up. Hmmmm. Nah, leave this breed out.
Otterhound; Great swimmer, kinda longish fur... nah - medium-sized fur. We'll keep him... just to see.
And last, Dutch Shepherd Dog; Long, fat fur, very brave and intelligent. Now Tramp is brave and intelligent, however he's got short fur. Leavin' this breed out.
Alright... time for personalities and more!
Elkhound; Brave, great guardian. Now let's see; Tramp was a great guardian to Lady and he sure is brave.
Husky; Stays very close to its family, very friendly and active. Tramp is friendly... ain't he? And he stays close to Lady and Jim Dear, Darling... and his kids.
Otterhound; Friendly dog. Tramp was friendly... too!
So Tramp could have been a mix of the Elkhound, Husky and Otterhound. Ears - High up, and his are half-folded. The husky sometimes might have ears like this, and the otterhound has floppy ears and the Elkhound hast triangular ears.
However; The breeds we chose at the beginning, the chow chow and all them... There's much more dogs that size. So this is only a "demo version" maybe. I decided to limit the number of breeds because if I listed every single breed bigger than a Cocker Spaniel and smaller than a Bloodhound, this article would be WAY too long to be accepted... I have a feeling it's way too long right now. Hah.
So yeah. Our answer to this question using this article is an Elkhound/Husky/Otterhound mix. However remember that I only limited the number of breeds and Tramp might be a mix of other breeds.
So my answer ain't right or wrong. It's just that... I used most of my knowledge about dogs for this article and it took me a while to write so I hope ye all enjoyed it and learned something from it! :)

What a great site you have here! It's very informative about the two
movies! I enjoyed the comic strips: read them all for less than an
hour. I hope you would keep adding more information even though the
sequel has been released 11 years ago. It's fun reading about a
Disney classic especially when you're a fan. Keep up the good work!

I think Lady is a King Charles Spaniel. The features fit better -
bigger eyes and long ears -- cute, very cute. |

I work at an animal shelter so I've seen all sorts of dogs come in and
out of our doors. I can definatly see Schnauzer in him, the way the ears flop over and the "moustache". Then again, several other breeds have that trait. Maybe he's a Schnauzer mix like people are saying, but then he could also be an Airedail terrier mix or a irish terrier mix.. |

The tramp is a Parson Russell Terrier. The shape of the muzzle and
the ears and that he is bigger than a Cocker Spaniel and smaller than
a blood hound. Parson Russell Terriers are taller and have wiry hair. They are very intelligent and a handsome breed of dog. |

Nice Article...... This is gonna sound random, but my dog is a Schnoodle (Schnauzer/Poodle) and looks exactly like Tramp. |

Tramp was based off an Irish Terrier. What his breed is supposed to be
in the movie, no one knows, but the artists used an Irish Terrier for
reference. |

It is a thoroughly created analysis and I applaud you for it. The
deduction is very well pieced together. However, I do propose a small
bit of information into the equation: mixed offspring generally
exhibit the traits of their parents but not all traits are passed down
into the pup (the idea of dominant vs. recessive alleles). The
breeding of large dogs with small dogs do not necessarily mean the
results would always be medium dogs but could result with dogs as
large or as small as the respective parent (Ex: Beago = around same
height as the Golden Retriever parent). The same goes for any other
trait of Tramp's and thus could have an ancestor that looks nothing
like him but the traits of the other ancestors cancelled his traits
from showing in Tramp. With the possibility of incomplete dominance
and co-dominance, the complexity of determining his true mix increases
dramatically. Like I stated above, it is a truly marvelous attempt but because of so many variables like dominant alleles, possible mutations (highly unlikely but still considered a variable), how the traits carry farther down the family tree, and even hidden traits not listed (such as muscle mass and genetic disorders) it is hard to determine his true mix, not to mention any considered mutts', based on only appearance and behavior. True analysis for determining a mutt's mix thus can only be done accurately through DNA sampling and a lot of time. Considering your sample size, you did quite well at deduction and have done more work than most people would ever do for such a topic. |

What about a stamdard size Shnauzer? Your research clearly isn't in
depth enough. |

With all due respect, I really think you're waaaaaaaay overanalyzing
this. Besides, in the extras on the L&T DVD, the production team made
it clear that the dog(s) they used for reference, in the artwork for
Tramp, were mutts. All of them. Ideally, that makes him a mutt. And
I believe even Disney may have said so. And there is the final
arbiter of that particular question. |

If you notice the scruff along his muzzle, he's got very powerful
terrier DNA there and I don't see any possible husky mixing in him. But nicely layered article. |

Hmm, a very nice article. I like how you had actual information on the
different dog breeds and compared them to Tramp. I would probably
agree with what you deduced! |
