This would make a good forums topic. I think the question has been
solved for the most part. |

Hmm, maybe this should have been a forum post... a. There is always the slightest chance that it could be the fitting-out period; the US is known to be boastful especially on such a magnificent achievement (and ultimate tragedy) as the Titanic. Then again it could also be a historical error as you point out in your Debate C about this just being a cartoon. Heck, maybe it might not even be the Titanic but another ship similar in design to it (could be her sister, the Olympic). b. Believe it or not, $625 back then was quite cheap; this price is well in the range for the middle class to afford it (which is what the class of Snob Hill is presumed at the least). In addition, the $825 Ford Model T is also known to have been mass produced starting in 1908. Despite the higher price (but still considered cheap by US standards at the time), it spread like wildfire and practically every American had one and/or knew how to drive one by 1920. 1909, which I presume was the starting time, would be when the Model T was just beginning to spread around. By 1911, three years since mass production of the Model Ts, I could see it finally spreading to small towns like the one where LATT took place (they are located somewhere in the New England region, close enough to Detroit where the spread originated from). c. Yea, historical discrepancies in movies, especially animated movies, are always a possibility. Not gonna argue there. Talking/texting over the internet doesn't show emotion so you don't know if it's a debate or argument; probably the reason why people really don't see many online discussions. I know you have no disrespect for me and neither do I for you. Personally if what you feel is right, then it is for you; I have no reason to truly dissuade you, I just like to see if your stance is one that can be backed up by facts and the same goes for my stance. |

Blue, keep a few things in mind (regarding what you said are flaws in
my logic here): a. even if the newspaper is not about the Titanic sinking, it would still date to 1912. Most news coverage of the ship, specifically in America, was in 1912. Granted, not all of it, but a significant portion thereof. And I might add that the image in the newspaper is of the ship after completion...not during the fitting-out period. b. Note the following quote: "Mass production in the automobile industry was introduced in 1901 by Ransom E. Olds, a pioneer experimenter since 1886. His company manufactured more than 400 of the now historic curved-dash Oldsmobiles in that first year. Each car sold for only $650. Henry M. Leland and Henry Ford further developed mass production methods during the early 1900s." (From: http://kids.britannica.com/comptons/article-197047/automobile). Remember that most people did not have an automobile in the early 1900s...this would have been a luxury reserved for the upper classes...and then still rather a novelty and a lark during that time. c. As to the relative calm of people during the WWI era as pertains to the movie...remember that it is an animated movie...a cartoon. And more, a sequel, and practically a musical. Not an historical documentary. There are plenty of unknowns and guesswork (and historical inconsistencies) pertaining to almost all of it. No worries though. We're just discussing. I'm not upset with you, and I mean no disrespect to you. I don't want to set a bad precedent, but on this website, one usually has to post disclaimers like this, or, well... |

@JC: although your logic does make sense, there are a few flaws to it.
For starters, I don't recall the newsprint ever saying Titanic sank so
theoretically it might also just be a report on Titanic's construction
(Titanic's hull was launched in May of 2011 so it could be a report on
that). Another flaw is that the time frame you place it in is during
the time of WW1 in which, although the US only partook in the last
year of the conflict, the populace wouldn't be so calm. My last flaw
for it is that automobiles were already out in the early 20th century.
A gasoline-powered vehicle in the US was tested and proven reliable in
1893 which, surprisingly, was made of a horse-drawn buggy and a motor
capable of generating 4 horsepower (ring any bells?). Of course, like you said, the dates are not truly set in stone so what you say may also be true. All we truly know is, like what Mighty said, the video must have taken place somewhere around the 1900's. |

Well, as a matter of fact, there is no date set in stone in the
movies. There is only a very brief and almost obscure shot of a
newspaper announcing the sinking of the Titanic (which was on April
14th-15th, 1912). However, it was in a stack of newspapers Jim Dear
used for washing the dogs (lining the floor). That does not guarantee
that it was 1912 in the movie. That being said, the clothing worn by the characters, and some of the vehicles driven around town, suggest the first ten years of the 20th century (1900-1910), and certainly there were no motor vehicles around in the general populace in the first decade of the 20th century. It is more likely that it is 1911-1920. THAT being said, in my fan fiction crossover series, Nome Meets Snob Hill (available from my Balto Source profile page), I pushed it forward to 1925 to fit the Balto story time frame. |

Well, all I know is that it;s set in the 1900's. |

| ||
whoops, I'll just edit that out... |
| June 28, 2011 | ||
Blue, you mean 1911 not 2011(teehee!) |
| June 28, 2011 | ||
| ||
It all began on Christmas morning of 1909 when we first meet Lady as a
puppy. It ended a day after July 4th ( hence it would be July 5th) of
1911 with Angel welcomed into the family and Scamp getting a bath.
Therefore it is but a span of around 1 year and 7 months (1 yr 6
months 10 days to be exact). |
