Released in 2006 and based on the comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis, Over the Hedge is the 12th animated feature produced by DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind prior animated hits like The Prince of Egypt, Shrek, and Madagascar.

After a long hibernation, a bunch of forest animals including Verne the turtle, Hammy the hyperactive squirrel, Stella the skunk, and others awaken only to find that their food supply is in danger. Most of their forest has been replaced by a suburban area built by humans, and completely separated by a giant hedge (a.k.a. “Steve”).
However, luck comes in when a smart raccoon named RJ steps in up convinces them there is much more over that hedge than they think, with the wonders suburbia has, and the endless amount of food they can steal. With the food problem on it’s way to being resolved, RJ is still yet to deal with unfinished business with a bear named Vincent…
Over 230 people would dedicate more than three years of work to bring this movie to life, with directors Tim Johnson (co-director of Antz) and Karey Kirkpatrick (writer of Chicken Run) being in charge of the production. Among those people was rock musician Ben Folds who provided five songs for the soundtrack.
Over the Hedge was widely released on May 19, 2006, and was met with critical and commercial success, grossing $336 million worldwide. Critics and audiences alike admired the movie for it’s appealing animation, likeable characters, and witty satire on humans living the suburban life. It was later nominated for eight Annie Awards, and ended up winning three of them for Best Character Design, Best Directing, and Best Storyboarding.
Today, Over the Hedge isn’t among the most remembered of the DreamWorks catalogue, although it still remains as a well-liked movie amongst many families and animation fans. This site is dedicated to spread the word and share the passion on this adorable animated hit!
