Darkwing Duck is spreading to Disney!

Written by steet :

(LONG news - click on "Read More" at the bottom!)Disney's Darkwing Duck

Darkwing Duck may be a Disney property, this doesn't change the fact that Disney itself wasn't much involved in the creation of the new comics. This is Boom! Studios idea, they are the ones who wrote the story, the artists who drew it, the ones who took the "risks", and Disney merely gave the "go ahead" to Boom (which is already a good thing!)

Also, you know that Disney has never really understood the potential of the Disney Afternoon. The only thing they did since the shows ended their run on syndication, is to release DVDs partly, without any extras and without any kind of advertisement. They don't realize that almost all US citizens in their 20-30's loved the shows, think they are among the best things Disney ever produced, and miss them.

Well, this may change soon...Malicia MaCawber, webmistress of our partner site Negaverse.net, has some real good news!

So! On Saturday I was at New York Comic Con, where I had a chance to meet the crew behind the Darkwing Duck comic. I thought I'd share my experience with you guys!

The first folks I met were Ian Brill, James Silvani, and Christopher Burns, during the autograph signing. Silvani was absolutely adorable, what a nice fellow! I really enjoyed chatting with him. Ian Brill was curious about my costume, and he later came to me and asked what I was supposed to be dressed as, since he and the guys were debating on it (I was Zero Suit Samus).

Later on I was back there with GreyofPTA and Sandra (SplatterPhoenix on DA), because she wanted to get the colourist, Andrew Dalhouse's autograph. I decided to buy all of the covers that I didn't have, which resulted in A LOT of signing! I was surprised, I told them they didn't have to sign them, since they were probably exhausted already and I had about 8 covers on me. But they insisted.

Then later on I was directed to Aaron Sparrow, and I ended up sitting and chatting with him for an hour or so. For those of you who don't know who Aaron is, he's basically the whole reason the Darkwing comic exists. He had brought the idea to Disney, and was the person who wrote the plot for the first three arcs that we have seen and will see (Ian Brill then filled in some of the blanks). He was the chief editor, and basically did all the background work and set the path for the comics. Unfortunately, he was let go by the company, so he is no longer the editor. He still remains extremely enthusiastic about Darkwing though, and we both geeked out talking about the world and the characters, and other such things.

The immense success of this comic has peaked interest inside Disney, which means good things for Darkwing. Some other VERY exciting news was revealed, but I'm going to wait until the people involved announce it :)

This is AWESOOOOME news, and EXACTLY what I hoped for when I first heard of the comic! Now some folks at Disney know this is a success and are getting interested! I wonder what their plans are, but my perfect dream would be :

- Direct-To-Video films based on the Disney Afternoon properties (many other companies have proved that to be successful)

- New Video games, either one for each series or a big crossover one a-la Kingdom Hearts with worlds. Hey, maybe if Epic Mickey is successful, and Darkwing is, the Ducktales game Warren Spector wants to make and for which everyone at Disney refused, may become a reality!

- And new episodes of the series! (but I admit, that one will probably stay just a dream for a very long time...)

- The most probable : a release of the final volumes of the series - either on DVD or digital distribution, or the shows being re-aired on Disney Channel, XD or (gulp!) the upcoming Disney Junior channel.

Whatever Disney has in mind, though, I hope doesn't get restricted to Darkwing and spreads to Talespin as well - after all, most people who love Darkwing, love it as well! It seems the one that is the most requested for a next comic to Boom is Talespin (the question was asked at their latest Comic Con panel again), Ian Brill even joked about it in an interview (which was mis-interpreted), and some polls clearly show what fans want the most!

Of course I'm disappointed that Aaron Sparrow was laid off (actually I already knew about it, and what is even more disappointing is that he said on Twitter that he HAD plans for a first arc of a TaleSpin comic, a bit in the same way he did for Darkwing!)

But I think Boom will keep the quality up though, as they said on the last comic con that "With the success of Darkwing, they want to take things a step at a time and do things as great as they can be, and not stretch people's budgets too thin " and that they "Cannot confirm or deny Talespin but very interested in building on Disney afternoon properties".

And of course, they repeated that (to summarize) they may make more, but only if Darkwing and Rescue Rangers sell well.

So, Talespin fellows, you know what you have to do : buy (or keep buying) the Boom Studios Disney Afternoon comics!!!

(Darkwing #5 is coming out at the end of October, no precise date yet!)
