He especially answered an interesting question relating to the auditions process :

In the normal casting process, a professional casting company brings numerous people into a studio to read sample dialogue lines (or "sides") to see if they have the right voice for the part. Then they give the producers cassette tapes of the various takes. (I still have my tapes!) Usually we find who we want on the first go-round, but sometimes more people are called in if the right voice isn't found. I'm guessing the average number of actors was 6-10 per part. I knew I wanted Sally Struthers from the get-go. And Phil Harris was a shoe-in. However, after 2-3 recording sessions with Phil, it was clear that his voice was right, but his tempo was slow (he was in his 80's at that point, I think). I was afraid the pace we had to go at to get 65 episodes done would destroy the man - and us. So that's when we started casting for Baloo... and that's when we found Ed Gilbert.

We had a preconceived notion for the Wildcat actor, but it didn't pan out. Nothing was working until we heard Pat Fraley, and he was SO wacky in the audition, we knew he was the one. Jim Cummings nailed Karnage & Louie on the first round.

Interesting note: Both Michael J. Pollard and John Ratzenberg auditioned for Tale Spin.
