Another Becky question I've been pondering is how she got her name. I'm sure her first name is inspired by Kirstie Alley's character Becky Howe from Cheers, but what about "Cunningham"? Why?

A few websites, I noticed, drew parallels between Rebecca Cunningham from TS and the character named Rebecca in "Cheers", and some speculated that maybe that was where her name came from. Now, those similarities are not entirely coincidental (Jymn, Mark and much of the writing staff were Cheers fans, and who wasn't?) but that isn't the really real story. So let me throw in my "tube" cents and set the record straight:
Rebecca's name is a radio-age reference, like many of the people and place names in TS. Back in the 1920s, the largest manufacturer of radios was RCA (Radio Corporation of America), and the largest manufacturer of radio tubes was a company named Cunningham Radio Tubes. In 1930, RCA
bought out the Cunningham company. The result was that, from 1930 to 1936, the radio tubes produced by this company were called "RCA Cunningham" models. Get it?
Mad Dog's origin
Baloo and Rebecca mirrored after Sam and Rebecca.
How refer to Rebecca?
Kit Cloudkicker's Mom?
Rebecca's dream
Rebbeca and Baloo
WildCat in Balooest of the Bluebloods
What's those things?
Making Miz Cunningham

Can anyone close to Disney confirm this? Who was this person who
posted it on the HF board? |

I think "Cunningham" sounds like high-class, aristocracy, and Rebecca
is the whole opposite of Baloo when it comes to that. That's probably
a reason why they chose this name. |

Pulled it out of a hat? On a list of common names from the 30's? Knew
someone with it? Or was the first name that came too mind that they
liked? |
