A Warning

Here is a message from Windhowler concerning theft and claiming your creations on Animation Source, Devintart, and any sites you are on.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

This is a message to all those who draw and render/edit screenshots.

As you may or may not know, there are thieves on various websites, such as Chicken Smoothie, FeralFront, Facebook, Pinterest, Deviantart, and Google Plus.

These thieves are mostly roleplayers. They use artwork and edits from Animation Source, DeviantArt and other sites without the artist/owner's permission.

They use these pictures for their roleplays. Sometimes they will change the featured character/s name/s, sometimes the gender/s as well, if they don't know whether they are a male or female.

Often they will write the character a completely new profile (small or big).

For Example: Troll Berserker's picture of Alma was taken. Alma was given a new name, Dawn, and a whole new profile. One of AppaloozaPalooza's characters was taken by the same person, and was also renamed (Robin) and given a new bio. The thief, however, gave credit for both images.

Some thieves admit that the work is not theirs.

Some (as a member of a Google Plus RP thread did) claim the picture as their own, and put their name on it, regardless of whether it has already got the original owner's signature/watermark or not.

You may, or may not, have heard of Pinterest . . .

If you've not heard of Pinterest ...

Pinterest
is a sharing site. It was primarily set up for people to share such things as crafts project ideas, photos, favourite artwork. In general, to share interests, hence the name Pinterest. In some way, it promotes websites / blogs / Facebook Pages as well.

To share an 'interest' picture on Pinterest ( to 'Pin' it), the site's members collect pictures they have found on the web, by using the picture's weblink or location link. They ''Pin'' them to their ''Boards'', folders each with a particular subject. The uploaded picture will have its source at the bottom - so click on the picture, and you'll go to the website it came from, or the very page it came from. This is legal sharing. It a bit like Google Images and Facebook mixed into one.

The real trouble is, however, Pinterest also gives its members the option of uploading from their own computer. So, thieves might see something on say, Animation Source and: right-click, save to computer . . . then upload it on Pinterest. Viola. No link at the bottom of the uploaded picture. So nobody can find out where that picture comes from very easily. And some pictures can get ''re-pinned'' by other, unknowing Pinterest users, many, many times.

Groups of roleplayers in Pinterest have special boards, shared between them, where they post the character artwork/edits that they have stolen and use them for roleplaying on the actual site, via Private Messages.

What Can Be Done? What Can You Do?

Blazetail has contacted the staff of Chicken Smoothie, and stolen artwork is gradually being taken down from there, as the original owners are being identified.

I myself will see what I can do on Google Plus.

Taking things off Pinterest is a bigger task - so many boards, and some stolen pictures being 're-pinned' so many times, it's hard to contact all the re-pinners. You can report any pictures that belong to you, that have not been credited properly.

There is something you can do to prevent people using your pictures, and/or changing your characters' names:

1. Claim Your Picture - Signatures, Credits and Watermarks.

Most of the roleplayers who steal pictures don't seem to like pictures with signatures. Many of the pictures they have stolen have no signature at all on them (not all people are scared of the mighty signature, and will still use a signed picture, or claim it as their own as I have mentioned - but the majority of thieves will not touched them).

So to help prevent your picture getting stolen, be sure to put your signature on it. For better measure, put ''of Animation Source'' or ''of Deviantart'' underneath your name,  and/or write the day you finished the picture.

Examples of how you can mark your picture:

Watermarking: /spirit/en/view_fanart/windhowler_The_Older_Amadias/67.html&numart=13285&deb=18&display=18

Black border with credits (and signature in corner): /spirit/en/view_fanart/windhowler_Blossoms_For_You/86.html&numart=13285&display=18

How to Watermark:

Here is an article on how to watermark your picture using two free downloadable programs: /board/post1510880.html#p1510880

2. Indentify Your Character

You can sometimes, artistically, put your character's name on the picture, to help prevent it being changed. But make sure your own name is on the picture as well!

3. Make a Difference

In general, thieves seem to like renders/edits a lot, because they really imitate the film style of whatever movie they are based on - well, they are edited screenshots after all.

They also like digital artwork which is supposed to imitate the Spirit/Balto/Lion King/etc. style.

I have seen little traditional (pencil drawn / painted) artwork stolen. Probably because it hasn't quite got that movie feel.

And I've seen even less artwork / edits with a unique style stolen.

So, if you edit/render, and/or draw digital art in the style of a certain movie, I'm afraid that kind of work is more likely to be stolen.

Taking up a different style might help prevent your work getting stolen.

- If you draw digitally, finding a unique style (more cartoony, or more realistic?) might help to put off thieves.

- If you render, you may need to develop a more original style of rendering.
- Having a different style is another way of marking your work.

Please spread the word against theft on any site you can!

Encourage watermarking, signing, etc.

Don't worry, things should be sorted out in the end.

As I have mentioned before on Windhowler's forum post concerning theft. There are also some art/edits being used on here - https://feralfront.com/index.php?topic=1288175.0

@Bae - That's what Troll and I are saying. We have no intentions of banning rendering or linearts

Banning renders and linearts is a very unnecessary mistake AS could execute. If the staff decide to consider taking in that rule, AS will be at a critical risk losing probably the majority of their members, I would most likely be the first to leave. If you don't see my point, I advise you to take a quick look at the character page of any source and see how many people have released character refs/images where they used lineart. Rendering doesn't make you any better than talented drawers who do art by free hand, however it is still art and if someone prefers to render and fill in linearts, leave them be. Encouraging someone to learn to draw on their own even if they have zero desires to learn is a waste of time. The best decision in this case would be just to heavily watermark every image they lay out.

For people who still ocasionaly comment positively on recolors it sounds weird to me that you are going by "ban all renders" now. Like Draco said - this "rule" is way too harsh. You can't force people on that. Just like some artists take pride in imitating the movie style (like TC96) and you can't really force them to change their art style if they like it this way.
However I'm all for encouraging people to art. Just like Windhowler - I only ocasionaly do recolors for site purposes and it's always for official movie characters so I don't really care if people take and edit them or not. I stoped making recolors partly because I didn't want them to stop my drawing progress and partly because they were a way too easy target for the thieves.

In case of art - there ALWAYS should be an opion to fill a legal DMCA charge to site owners to get your drawings removed. As for recolors - the image was not yours in the first place, you can't really charge people with legal complaint because it might get YOU into trouble. Just think about it this way.

We can't demand that members draw if they don't have a desire to. They'll just be taught to dislike it and the sources by making it a rule. You can't force art.

The only thing I can think of at the moment that might encourage people to draw rather than render is to make more tutorials and guides, maybe make beginner prompts to give members ideas. Maybe have there be rewards of some kind as well.

Roll to the Rescue!
Maybe there should be a limit. Allow new users to post 5-10 renders, whether they're bases or actually renders, then have a mod send them a PM telling them they can't post anymore renders, that they need to start contributing in different ways.

It sounds kinda stupid, but I wouldn't want to cast people into forcing to draw right away. Have them ease into it, you get me?

The all mighty green
if anyone see these thiefts do keep in mind they may lash out

i was unsure if a member (whom rarley comes on) was on CS so i contacted them on DA, they said it was not them and messaged the person, who lashed out at the AS member (this was reported to CS staff)

This site could really use more artwork than renders, so I agree with encouraging more hand drawn content. And since I doubt renders are going anywhere, I think putting a warning (about how renders are more likely to be stolen) in the sending options may be a good idea, however that would require Steet's help.

Good to hear your opinions, both.

Rendering (and other image editing) is thing I do on occasion. The only edits/images I make these days are for Siteboosting, helping Pawface. I am always aware that any images I make may get stolen, despite my signature.

I've had some of my images taken; and some image collages, both by my sisters and myself, have been used without permission (on blogs and as wallpapers of Facebook groups/pages).
I also know that one Spirit drawing I did, trying to imitate the film style, was copied.

However, to my knowledge, none of my artwork has ever been stolen. Some of it has been shared - responsibly (the sharers keeping my name on it, as well as its source) - and pretty much all of those shared were of official characters. No, never actually stolen.

I draw more traditional art than digital now. A few years ago I refrained from trying mimic the style of any animated film, to create my own.

Happystool: I agree, drawing should be encouraged. Real creativity should be encouraged. Editing images can be creative, but drawing/painting even more so.

Mighty: In regards to your second comment, about the users on FeralFront, it reminds me of when a DeviantArt member used numerous fan characters from Bambi Source. She did not steal any pictures of them, but made the characters, which belonged to different fan universes, interact with each other, some even as mates.

I noticed that the characters she chose to use either had digital drawings (similar to the Bambi style) or rendered pictures for detail pics. It is possible that some people think such characters are official. I remember when I was very young, I used to mistake certain characters - usually popular fan versions of Balto pups, drawn in the style of the movie - to be official.

Just to clarify, I understand that theft isn't something that can be stopped, but something needs to be done to get it under control. I'm glad that people are standing up to the thieves, and reporting stolen characters, but that's just a game of cat and mouse. If you look at the page linked bellow, a user going by the name Wild World is sourcing their images from the Spirit Source character page. It appears, to me, that people think the Spirit Source (and possibly other sites) character page is a stock page.
