Mental
Personality: Mahogany started out a naïve and trusting buck when he first escaped into the wild, young and wide-eyed. He had heard plenty of the wild rabbits and aspired to join them and become strong, but after a run-in with three rogues – possibly in Darkhaven territory – he grew cold and angry. He harbored a deep hatred toward wild rabbits and refused to forget what had been done to him, leading him into a life of bigotry and fearful anger. He craves revenge on every rabbit, not just the three who hurt him. He never lets go of the past and forgets nothing notable. However, he is a strong leader and founded his warren on a principle that he should grant other escapees like himself a haven, whether they are attempting to get home or find a place to live safely. He despises the wild rabbit, believing them inferior, but loves his domestic brothers and sisters – but worse than a wild rabbit is a domestic one who chooses to reject their heritage and live as wild rabbits do. He understands logistics, though, and while he refuses to accept wild rabbits, he trains his owsla from a very young age and finds good use for all of them. He rejects Frith and El-Ahrairah in favor of Silith, the deer’s spirit of the Greenwood. He loves the kits.
Likes: His warren, fighting wild rabbits, killing wild rabbits, revenge
Dislikes: Wild rabbits, the wild outside the Greenwood
Fears:
Wild Life: Masked by rage to the point that he himself does not realize where this hatred comes from, Mahogany has a deep phobia of wild rabbits after his unfortunate experience with them.
Goals: Destroy Watership Down
Strengths:
Lean: Lean muscle gives Mahogany the best of both worlds – quick and strong, but not particularly heavy, meaning driving his enemies into the ground and ripping their throat clear is out of the question. He must rely on claws and minimal contact.
Mistrusting: That which one could say helped lead to Woundwort’s fall was his constant reaccepting of Campion. While the story is unknown to Mahogany, he will not make the same mistake: He judges rabbits based on the current situation rather than past loyalties, making him ruthless in beridding himself of possible spies or wild-sympathizers.
Weaknesses:
Obsessive Hate: There are few to no allies to the Greenwood Harbor warren due to Mahogany’s intense hatred of wild rabbits. If an ‘enemy’ warren – that is, any wild warren – wished to align with Mahogany, their only chance would be to send a domestic-bred rabbit to speak with him.
History:
Mahogany was born within a hutch, and he learned from her about the wild rabbits they could often see on the field. From the very start, Mahogany admired those rabbits, all strong and very fast. As time went on, a hole was worn into the wire – bit enough for him to squeeze through, and he did.
He was off to find himself a warren. He wandered the wild, learning quickly how to survive, but before long, things changed for him.
He found what he was looking for: Wild rabbits.
Rabbits who were, apparently, of Darkhaven origin. Three great rabbits appeared from the bushes and attacked Mahogany, pinning him to the ground and ripping at his coat. They left a long, near-fatal cut in his stomach and, in order to mark him as domestic and weak, one of the trio left four long scars over his mouth.
They left him for dead.
Mahogany only barely managed to drag himself into a field, and went unconscious. He was found by Cowslip’s warren rabbits, and in an attempt to bring in one more rabbit who would die before them to the snare, they healed him.
But Mahogany knew the ways of man and saw through what was going on. He was disgusted by the warren of the snare, and knew then that these wild beasts were truly inferior to himself and those that were domestic. He waited, though, until one of Silverweed’s poems were in progress to do anything about it: When the young buck had every rabbit in the warren arrested in his words, Mahogany publically denounced the warren in front of them all, and offered to take those with hutch-blood with him. Three came.
Mahogany swore to disown his family after that, for he now hovered somewhere between domestic and wild. Something that would give rise to a savage warren indeed: Wild enough that they were willing to fight, but domestic enough that they had no notion honor or generosity. Only the desire to purge the wild rabbits from the world. Then, soon, winter came on.
This was then Mahogany’s journey brought him to a part of the world he’d never seen anything quite like: A place he’d call the Greenwood. A pine forest, all covered in frost-lined, emerald needles. It was very dense, and difficult to navigate, but something assured Mahogany there would be few land predators. He came to a place then where the trees opened into a very small green meadow, and he settled here for several days after building a scrape. He eventually ran into a small underground stream, and dug a watering hole from the scrape. He built his den in the roots of a pine tree.
Before long, he realized he and his followers were only rabbits in these woods and decided not to keep it to himself. He began regular patrols to pick up domestic or domestic-blooded rabbits, killing any wild rabbits that came near. He created Greenwood Harbor.
As time went on, he found that there were neighboring warrens outside the Greenwood, and his owsla sometimes asked to raid. More often than not, he would consent, with no need to go with them. As this went on, savagery became common – relics would sometimes be taken from killed wild rabbits, and tattoo-like scars became fashion. When a buck would get a scar that was particularly unpleasant to see, he would have it carved into a design.
Mahogany never took part in this, but it always reminded him of his past.
Before long, though, one of Holly’s patrols strayed too close. Mahogany did not manage to kill anyone on the patrol, but definitely realized this warren was a danger as subsequent patrols came closer and closer to Greenwood Harbor.
He knew what he wanted then: He knew immediately upon seeing a buck among them with a thick mane – Bigwig, who was clearly heavily relied on by the wild rabbits and, of course, was extremely proud to be one of them.
He wanted the Watership Down warren purged from the world. He wanted to see every wild rabbit there dead, for in his eyes, they didn’t deserve to exist.
