He's rather cowardly as a result of being born in the hutch and raised by man. He is fastinated by most of things he finds in the wild. He's not as strong, fast and agile as the wild rabbits, causing him to be a joke matter for the rest of his warren.
History:
Patch was born in the hutch to a breeding pair of Miniature Holland Lop rabbits. When he was a very young kit, his mother told him how she met a wild rabbit once she was let out to run outside. Since then Patch wondered how it is to live without a human protection.
Once the litter grew up to be given away, their owner brought them to the big market. Patch was quite scared because of all the unknown sounds and smells around him. When he was sitting in the cage awaiting for a buyer, he overheard a conversation about rabbits being sold for meat. Obviously the humans didn't mean Holland Lops, but Patch didn't know that and this made him even more frightened. He started biting the cage to get away and avoid being eaten by humans, but the barns were too strong. Fortunately for him, some furious animals began to chase each other though the marketplace. They accidentaly knocked off Patch cage from the table, causing it to open and freeing the frightened young buck.
Patch ran away as fast as he could untill the marketplace was long behind him. He struggled though the wilderness he had never seen before, with absolutely no idea where to go. He wanted to find the wild rabbits but he didn't know where to look for them. He spent a few days and nights alone, slowly making his way forward, hiding in the bushes whenever he heard a suspicious sound. After some time he finally reached a hill where some wild rabbits tracked him and started to ask him questions. Patch explained himself, asking to join their warren. The rabbits were unsure because their Chief was not with them, but they let Patch stay untill he comes back.
When the Chief Rabbit, Hazel came back, he welcomed Patch in his warren, though the other rabbits weren't really happy for the idea of having to care for another domestic rabbit. In the warren, that was named Watership Down, Patch met another former hutch rabbit - Clover. Unlike others, Clover was really patient and understadning. She was the one who showed him around and taught him the laws of the wild. Patch is still afraid of most of the things, but he is really eager to prove he can be useful. However, most of the warren members still see him as an useless lop-eared plump.
