Full name: Sallie Ann Jarrett
Breed: Pointer
Age: About 3 years 9 months at the time of her death.
Voice: Amanda Seyfried (https://youtu.be/TbRtVJYUADs)
Eye color: Hazel
Parents: Unknown
Siblings: Unknown
Likes: Heaven, her new friends, thinking about her life on earth
Dislikes: Anyone from the South (like Charlie and Itchy) or with a Southern accent, knowing she'll never see any of her earthly friends again
Personality: She was clean in her habits and strictly honest, never touching others' food unless it was given to her, waiting patiently until it was. She was also brave and very loyal, and would never abandon her friends. For example, on one occasion her unit tried to send her to the rear because they feared she would be killed during the fighting at Antietam, but she would not abandon them. She was not afraid of being shot at by the enemy, and would often grab the bullets once they hit the dirt around her comrades.
History: She was born in May of 1861 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. At the age of four weeks she was gifted to Captain William R. Terry of Company I by a local resident, close to where the Union Army's 11th Pennsylvania Infantry regiment was training. The soldiers immediately declared the pup to be the unit mascot, and named her Sallie Ann Jarrett after a beautiful local woman who frequented the camp to watch the soldiers drill, and after their commanding officer, Phaon Jarrett.
All the soldiers took turns feeding and caring for her.
Sallie adapted quickly to army life, joining the soldiers during their drills and establishing her place beside the color guard for dress parade. Whenever the regiment left camp, her chosen position was at the head of the march with the horse ridden by the regiment's colonel.
When the 11th Pennsylvania shipped south in April of 1862, the men couldn't bear to leave without Sallie (a year old at the time) so along she went. She showed dislike to civilians, and her comrades claimed that she hated Rebels even more.
With the soldiers, Sallie learned to endure the hardships of campaigning. She didn't shy away from battle, but rather accompanied the regiment into the fighting, taking a position at the front lines and barking furiously at the enemy. She saw action in each of her regiment's engagements, among them Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.
In September of 1862, about a month after first seeing combat at Cedar Mountain, she had a litter of puppies, who were sent to loving families back up north while Sallie remained in the field.
On two occasions, Sallie marched with the regiment in review before President Lincoln, who tipped his hat to her as she led the regiment in spring of 1863.
On July 1, 1863, the first day of fighting at Gettysburg, Sallie became separated from the regiment after it was overrun by Confederate soldiers during the Union retreat to Cemetery Hill, and the soldiers of the 11th feared she had been killed. Sallie had become trapped behind enemy lines. When medics returned to the battlefield two days later, they found Sallie lying with the 11th Pennsylvania's dead and wounded, hungry and half dead from exhaustion; she had been guarding them.
She also saw combat in the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5 to 7, 1864.
Soon after, during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Sallie was hit in the neck and treated by a surgeon. The Minié ball (https://en.wikipedia.org/
On February 5, 1865, during the Battle of Hatcher's Run, Virginia (https://en.wikipedia.org/
Next thing Sallie knew she was in Heaven, and her head no longer hurt from the Confederate bullet that had ended her life. She had been admitted in for her bravery, and for her loyalty to her comrades.
For some time after she wanted to return to earth to reunite with her friends, but was told she couldn't because her earthly body was damaged from the gunshot and had already been buried. As time went by Sallie came to accept that she would never see her regiment again. Eventually she made other friends. She had a brief friendship with Charlie, but ended it when she found out he was from the South, as Sallie still considers anyone from the South to be Confederate; she doesn't know the Civil War has been over for quite some time and that things have changed.
Relation to ADGTH: Was welcomed to Heaven by Annabelle; was friends with Charlie for a short time
