Balto's Unknown Puppyhood

Balto's Unknown Puppyhood

What do we know so far about his past and parents?

Sure, you know that Balto (in the movie, not real-life) was half-wolf, half-husky. So what else? Who were his parents? What was life like for him before he became Nome's greatest hero?

From what has been revealed so far in the Balto trilogy, fans know very little about him. In the first movie, it is revealed that Balto's mother was the one that gave him his wolf genes (first mentioned in the Alley scene by Steele in the beginning of the film), meaning that his father must have been a husky.

Steele: 'I've got a message for your mother. Awooooo!'

This makes us realize that pretty much the majority of Nome knew about Balto being half-wolf, especially the ways that he was being treated by many of the townspeople through much of the first part of the film. How did they know this? How did they know his name was Balto? Perhaps the people named him or something? Who knows.

Balto

Balto 2: Wolf Quest confirmed the already obvious thought of his parent's pedigrees when Aleu asked him how he was born as 'part-wolf'.

Balto: 'I'm the one who's part wolf.'
Aleu: 'How could this happen?'
Balto: 'Look, Aleu. My dad was a husky who had pups with a wolf.'

He also reveals more information that helps us Balto fans imagine what his mother looked like, in quite an ironic way. Balto also mentioned a bit about his 'foster father', Boris.

Balto: 'I was accidentally seperated from her when I was young, so I never spent much time with...the wolf. But I remember that she was as white as snow, and she had this warm voice that made me feel safe. Then Boris took me in, and after being raised by a goose, it's a wonder I don't honk instead of bark.'

The conclusion of Wolf Quest also revealed the identity of his mother, the 'White Wolf' Aniu, who was guiding both him and her own granddaughter to a new adventure of their heritage.

An questionable point could also be made from Wolf Quest. Nava, the wise wolf shaman of the wolf pack, is a very mysterious creature, since he meets with Aniu through his dreams (just like Balto) and also calls Balto 'my brother' when they go their separate ways. Could Nava be related to Balto by blood? It is possible, but it is not proven. He seems too old to be Balto's 'litter' brother, but he could be an older step-brother (from a different male); these are just guesses so it could be possible. Most likely they know each other because Aniu told him about Balto and most likely made Aniu lead him to the pack, as mentioned in this line: 'It was I who sent for you.'

Balto

In the third film, Wings of Change, Balto mentions to Stella about a few things about Boris, with a very questionable thought included.

Balto: I’ve known Boris since I was a pup. Well, he maybe a pain in the butt, but he’s…well, he’s the dad I never had.

Did Balto ever really know his father? I guess he must have known that he was a husky and all, but probably forgot all of his memories of him. His father's name is unknown, and is most likely dead or in another location not mentioned in any of the films yet. Hopefully, future movies in the Balto series will add more information to Balto's past and his parents. Only time will tell.

Stay tuned . . . .

Well, the writer of Balto-2 has confirmed that Balto never had a father. She described Balto's father as a "stray dog, which is like a human father, who begets a child and then never even knows it". Also she confirmed that Aniu is the Great Mother of all wolves and a part of the Great Guardian Spirit (i.e. Balto is a half-spirit and, as the writer described, is "only a part of a greater plan" in context of Aleu being the chosen one leader from prophecy)

(then why Balto considered himself as a wolfdog and his father as a dog, if he lived and knew only his wolf-mother and never had a father? Balto would consider himself as a normal wolf; why humans considered Balto as a half-breed instead of regular wolf, if Boris found and adopted Balto, not humans? why Balto never tried to leave Nome and find mother and return to her? why Aniu, being literally a wolf goddess, never tried to find and return her son? why Balto so wanted to be a sled dog and be with humans and dogs instead of wolf pack, if he always was rejected by humans and dogs until the film's final? why Balto was ashamed of his wolf heritage, if he had fond memories of his mother and loved her? it makes no sense with Balto's mother being his wolf side in canon of the original film with Balto's mother being a working husky and father being a wolf it makes sense, but in sequel's canon it doesn't)

Could Bolto and Steele have the same dad?

Steele could be from an older litter of pups. Then their dad had pups with a wolf. That could be why Steele is alot bigger and hates Bolto so much.

Their dad's master might have moved that could be why we don't see him. Bolto says in the second movie that he was separated from his mother as a pup. If he has other siblings, they could have grown up in the wild with their mother.

I don't know. This is just my thoughts on it

There are a few other things that we can know about his father by studying the films thoroughly. It is not uncommon for dogs to gain traits from one of the parents of their parents. Aleu had very obvious blue eyes while balto had brown/golden eyes and Jenna had brown. Balto's mother had golden eyes so it could be said that his eyes were blue. Also, wolves gain their colors due to their parent's colors mixing, since Aniu was white and balto was brown his father would most likely have to be black or very dark brown. Plus I personally believe what I read in a fanfic, that Balto's father was stolen and his mother was shot by the thief.

I think that if there were a Balto 4, then it should be Balto's father coming back and telling Balto ( and Jenna, too I guess) , how he and Aniu met, and then what happened after the pups came. Or if he is dead and he doesn't have a spirit, then Aniu could come back and tell Balto.

I like that idea. Too bad they didn't do something like what you said or what I said in a movie. Maybe the love between Aniu and Balto's dad could have been forbidden? *shrugs shoulders*.

No weapon can sever the soul from me
Actually, Balto really was a half wolf/half husky dog. It's sad that I'm only 12 and I know more about him than my parents, and we're Alaskan!

I agree how Balto may be related to Nava, but I doubt he could be a step brother, I'm thinking he could be his uncle (Aniu's brother). But a very good article!

Hum. Awesome article. It makes me think!

And if
Balto's dad was Steele... I would giggle a lot.

In response to Jenna05;;
o.O; Steele is an awesome
antagonist. Just like Scar in the Lion King. But that's
where similarities end. Their personalities don't match
up... besides them being evil. x3

I'm writing a fanfic about this. I thought it would be cool to cross "The Call of the Wild" by jack london w/ balto. Aniu and buck meet and have pups .But when hunters attack aniu is dead leaving, Buck completely heartbroken and the all the pups are missing except for Balto and his brother Maeto. Fast forwarding to when Buck can't care for his sons any more he leaves them with boris. May seem dumb I kno. I'm also continuing on the story about how Balto meets jenna and steele and later how he meets his long lost littermates.
