The Faults in the Balto Trilogy

The Faults in the Balto Trilogy

What facts in the Balto Trilogy actually align with history?

Don’t get me wrong. Balto 12&3 are great movies. But how many of the facts in them actually align with history? For one thing, Balto wasn’t a wolfdog, he was a Siberian Husky.

And look at the photos.

Balto

Real Balto doesn’t look anything like Movie Balto. Real Balto was black with a white stocking-like mark on his front right leg, a sock-like mark on his front left leg, and he had black toes on his two back feet, a white patch on his chest, and the tip of his muzzle was white.Movie Balto is a brown color, pale brown stoking-like mark on all three legs, a pale brown chest, underbelly, throat, under tail, the bottom half of his nose, and pale brown patches around his eyes.

In fact, Movie Balto looks more like Togo than Real Balto.
See.

                                                                                           Balto
Ok, so they don’t look that alike. The tails aren’t exactly alike, and the colors. But Togo was brown, you just can’t see it because it’s a black and white photo.
But if you look at Togo’s taxidermy…………

Look

I guess he’s a bit less of a solid color, he has some bits of Black and Tan mixed in with the brown, and he’s not the exact same shade, but he still looks a lot like Balto. Especially in the third movie, when Balto’s coat is a bit darker.
And Balto was owned. He wasn’t a stray who lived in a boat. He was owned by a dog breeder and musher. named Leonhard Seppala (who also owned Togo).

And the Serum Run, originally was going to be just Togo and his team, going all the way to Nenana and back. But a few hours after Seppala and Togo left, the government decided to turn it into a relay, and set up all the mushers along the trail to Nome.
And Balto never had to chase after Steele and fight him, because Steele never existed! In fact almost all of the characters in Balto never existed. All but Balto, The Doctor (who is probably supposed to be Dr. Curtis Welch), The Musher (who is probably supposed to be Gunner Kaasen), and the Telegraph operator (because there had to be one in nome).
And Balto was assigned to pull the second to last leg of the relay. He ran that leg and the last one too because it was so dark that his musher, Gunner Kaasen, didn’t see the town where the next musher, and by the time he realized they had passed it, it was too late to go back.
And he never went through a cave with icicles or run from an avalanche.

Balto                                   Togo
And Balto never had puppies! In fact, he didn’t stay in Nome after the Serum Run. He, Kaasen, and their team, went on a tour of the lower forty-eight states. After the tour, Kaasen abandoned the dogs, and they ended up as a side-show at a circus in California. They weren’t treated well three, they weren’t fed well and barely ever got taken on walks. But a man from Cleveland Ohio, bought them and took them to a zoo in Cleveland, and they lived there happily for the rest of their lives.
Again, I’m not trying to criticize the Balto movies, they’re great, but they’re not exactly historically correct. I’m just trying to tell people all that I know.
