Unfair Matchup

Unfair Matchup

Not to be standing up for Steele, but they weren't being fair.

Remember when Steele's team comes in from the sled-race in the beginning? Well, you may also recall when Rosie's hat was blown out of her hand and onto oncoming sled-team. Balto then darts out and beats Steele to it. Nice job Balto!

Steele

Then, when the Steele's musher gets his photo taken for winning the race, Steele comes in to hear his musher say "do you think Steele is losing his edge?" The photo guy replies with "yeah, it looks like any dog can out run him."

The point is, Steele just ran a full blown race across some great distance while Balto sprinted 100 feet, now of course a young, well- rested dog can beat another dog that was just finishing a long race, thus the second dog was tired to the bone, and easy to beat.

On top of what ZukotheCat said, Steele's musher may have also noticed that Steele had to cheat in order to win (snapping at the oposing team), AND Steele was also the three-time-winner before hand, so there had to be high expectations for him. Even so, saying he lost his edge was a bit harsh. Even if he hadn't cheated, the worst that could happen would be coming in second which isn't that bad.

Good point there, but Steele is a husky, who should be equipped to run, run RUN!!!

True, but Steele is in shape for races while Balto is not. In running, you have to have you body in physical fit condition. This takes a lot of training and months practice. Steele should be faster than Balto, even if he already ran a few miles. So it was fair in a manner of speaking. Balto could just be talented in running, which is common in dogs, but rare for races. Trust me on that one

I think they're just making excuses. I mean, if I were the musher, I'd be pretty humiliated.

Maybe becaus they didn't think about it right then, but it was Balto who beat him. They probably thought, 'Balto beat Steele!' Because he was the big nothing of the town.

I'm a lone wolf...
Well, I think they were saying he's loosing his touch in races, saying that the other dog team that was going neck-to-neck with him would never have a chance of getting to his supposed speed, and that the only way he one was by snapping at the other team.

They were just trying to make Balto look good like a hero and steele look bad like, well the bad guy.

Well, maybe the other team didn't tell on them, and when Steele cheated, it would have been very hard to see because it was in a valley, thus they were concealed.

Perhaps. Of course there was the fact that Steele only won by cheating. But if that was publicly known, how was Steele not disqualified?

Say wut?
This is true...though honestly I hate to admit it lol However, I think that the entire scene was meant to portray that Balto was faster than Steele all of the time. (The producers probably thought that the young audience intended to watch the movie wouldn't catch onto that; I didn't when I was small.) Otherwise, why would Balto be the hero in the first place? It's the old standby, "good guys always win, bad guys always end up losing." But you have a very good point in this, too.

I noticed that too! Although they might not have been referring to that moment only, as Steele would've lost the race if it weren't for his cheating. But yeah, I agree with you on that point.
