Boris is very important in the first and second film, also important in the third but not AS important.

Boris in the first film says to Balto 'A dog cannot make this journey alone.... but MAYBE a wolf can.....' now, when Balto sees the white wolf and is giving up, who's voice rings through his mind? Boris's. Also, in Balto II Boris is the one to say..... well, Jenna goes through her talk about raising the pups and Boris goes 'LET GO!!!' And when Balto goes 'She'll find a home,' then Boris replies 'yes, but when that time comes, will you let her?' and Boris also 'raised' Balto, otherwise he probably would have died, (well, probably), he may be a loud-mouthed, kindof dumb sounding and looking goose, but really, HE said 'LET GO!!' HE said 'a wolf can make this journey along but not a dog!!' HE told Balto to give Aleu her home.

Now, in Balto three, I know most people HATE Stella, but she went along and helped Balto to find Duke, but ONLY because Boris got packed on to it.

Balto may not have had Boris in real life, or Jenna, or Steele, but then, Boris is the hero-kindof--- Boris may be goofy and dumb but Boris really did do all that, now, in the TRUE story, Balto didn't need him, he was only a 'Scrub dog' and he went and did it, because he was the last sled dog to lead the team, but Boris was very important in the films, so anyone else could have done it, but..... they chose Boris, so he was very important, because he was part-wolf no one wanted him, apart from Rosy, Jenna and BORIS, Boris tried to cheer Balto up in Balto1, aswell.

He even tries to protect Balto from Steele.
