History

Athera was one of those pups and after her father vanished she and her siblings were looked after by their mother, Hermosa, who (though aggrieved at the disapperance of her mate) did her best to raise their pups in Thaddeus' absence.

The pups were sold easily. Athera was bought by Mr Sulski. He trained her along with other young dogs. When she was old enough, Athera was put in her uncle Lurth's team. She proved to be an exceptionally good sled-dog, but two years later she had an accident: one stormy night Athera and her team-mates were just pulling cargo along a steep ledge when her reins somehow broke from the sled. She slide over the ledge!
   
Luckily she landed in thick snow and wasn't hurt. When Athera looked up she could see her master had stopped the team and was searching for her. Athera barked to him but the storm drowned her call. Then the weather started to get worse, so in the end Athera's team-mates were forced to give her up for dead and left her.
 
Athera sat in the terrible storm until a pack of wolves found her and took her to their den. One of the wolves was named Kondor and he and Athera took a liking to each other and became friends. However, they both knew that one day Athera would have to return to her home.
 
For two months Athera stayed with the pack and when finally the day one which Athera was to leave came, Kondo advised that he should escort her home. Athera agreed.

One their third day travelling, Athera and Kondo came to a crevasse, which widened into a small valley. Here they found an old dog. He had found his way into the valley, but got himself trapped in it.

With teamwork, Kondo and Athera helped the eldery dog out of the valley. After, Athera noticed how familiar the dog looked. She asked his name and he said: 'Thaddeus, I was once a race-dog.'

Athera whooped with sheer delight! She told Thaddeus that she was his daughter, Athera! Happily, the three headed for Koyuk. Before they reached the town, Kondo separated from Athera and Thaddeus and returned to his pack.

Hermosa, Mr Sulski and Athera's team-mates were overjoyed to see their long lost friends! But in the next two weeks since her return, Athera found that living with humans and working with dogs hard for her. She had learned so much from Kondo about the ways of living free that she felt like becoming permanently wild. When her uncle Lurth learned about how she felt, he asked Thaddeus and Hermosa to have a serious talk with Athera.

Athera told her parents that she wanted to be wild. Hermosa was stunned, but Thaddeus understood and said to his daughter: 'If that is what you want, let it be so...'

So Athera left Koyuk town and journeyed back into the wilderness, living the life of a lone dog, until she was reunited with Kondo and the two lived togeather in happiness for the rest of lives.
