Build:   Unknown build since he is a mutt. He does have very ragged scruffy fur though.

Personality:   Duncanis an optimistic little boy, even though he has multiple injuries. He sees the world as a big quite scary place and it takes him a long time to cope with change. He is really shy, but once he gets to know someone, he will be extremely outgoing and hyper around them. There is some depression in his heart from his early past, but deep love resides there for those he knows the closest. Any family or friends that he loves are loved with a fierce passion and it breaks his heart to lose any of them. He never feels like he doesn’t belong with his adoptive mother Naomi and her family. His injuries don’t stop him from holding his head high…

Markings/Colorings:   Duncan’s coat consists of multiple sandy browns. His eyes are like the dark blue-green of the ocean depths.

Friends:

Daron and Hayley – Duncan is grateful to Daron and Hayley for helping all of his wounds heal and for taking him in. His favorite place to be is cuddling on Hayley’s lap, especially when she’s stroking him…

Naomi – Naomi is Duncan’s hero and loving mother. He loves her with a passion and admires her for her bravery, compassion, and for her care of his wellbeing. Even after he finds out that she isn’t his real mother, he still calls her  and tells everyone that she is his mother…

Sam – Duncan is shy around Sam at first, but soon begins to open up to his uncle. He becomes Duncan’s biggest role model next to his mother. Duncan loves being with Sam and always enjoys being the hyper little pup that he is around Sam. He tells all of the things that he achieves (as any young child does) and especially enjoys climbing on and around Sam. His uncle is almost like a ‘father’ figure to Duncan in the sense that he’s one of the few males that Duncan ever sees…

Relation to Balto:   Duncan’s Uncle Sam moves to Kenai, Alaska, and then about a year later, Duncan, Naomi, and their owners move to Fairbanks, Alaska.

History

When Duncan was only a month old there was a terrible accident that killed his parents. Their owners were able to save the pups and examined each of them. All of the pups came out without any injuries except for little Duncan. He had multiple injuries including and fractured front leg bone and a deep gash in his left ear that rendered his left ear muscles useless. Rather than bothering with working to get his wounds to heal the owners chose to lay him on the beach and abandon him. They left with the other pups and Duncan never saw any of them again…

Being a tiny infant, Duncan became dehydrated fast and constantly cried out. He was hurt, hungry, and hot and like any infant, he wanted someone to take care of his needs. A dog named Naomi found him and took him to her home where she and her owners tended to his injuries. They fed him and adopted him, while Naomi adopted him as her son. He began to heal fast, but would always be more fragile and susceptible to injury…

Most of his time was spent with his mother, uncle Sam, and with Hayley. Hayley would sit for hours examining maps, and computer screens to monitor the weather and seismic activity and would willingly pick up Duncan. There he would cuddle in her lap and fall asleep as she stroked him and told him what a sweet boy he was…

When he was three months old, a large earthquake rippled the island. Duncan’s uncle Sam had come to visit and everyone dashed out of the house and into the jeep to warn the island of the coming tsunami. Duncan scrambled to get to the door, but was accidentally forgotten. He had no idea what a tsunami was, but he was about to find out…

A large wall of water appeared on the beach and Duncan knew its power when it slammed the house and all of the other houses and trees. He cried out as he was slammed into the walls of the house and barely was able to reach out and cling to one of the rafters. Knowing that this was most likely his only way of survival he clung to it for dear life. Half of the house collapsed and a second wave was on its way. He cried for help as he lost his grip and was slammed against another rafter, where one of his legs got stuck…

Naomi appeared in the water and a delighted smile came across Duncan’s face as his mama had come to get him. She crooned to him that it would be alright and broke part of the wood, freeing Duncan’s leg. She grabbed his scruff and he felt safe being in his mother’s grasp. Both of them were flung as Naomi struggled to fight the current and were gradually swept inwards towards other villages. In one of them, a few villagers were aboard a small metal motorboat and they came towards Naomi. Duncan was nervous as his mother held him out of the water as high as she could and the men and women gently picked him up and lay him in the boat on a few blankets. Duncan looked up as a second wave pounded the island and when he looked again, he could no longer see his mother…

Heartbroken and with a broken leg Duncan was returned to Daron and Hayley. Depressed he told his story of what happened to Sam and could tell that Sam was sure that Naomi was dead, even though Sam told him otherwise. Without anyone else to go to, Duncan cuddled with Sam as they traveled in the jeep back to the east side of the island after the waves had sucked back out…

On the beach they found Naomi and all began to cry as she lay motionless. Then, as her eyes flittered open they all shouted for joy and covered her in hugs and kisses. Duncan gained an extreme amount of respect for his mother that day that would never cease to exist…

After disaster efforts were no longer needed, Duncan’s owners Daron and Hayley decided that they had had enough disasters for awhile and chose to follow Sam and his owner Kit back to Alaska. There they bought a house and research center in Fairbanks and concentrated most of their studies to the Denali Fault. Duncan still loved to go to the beaches in Alaska, and was at peace now that he was still with his mother and owners and could see his uncle Sam, which was still quite often…
