Characters rules, and JerseyCaptain

Written by steet :

I will address here two of the main problems occuring with moderation on the site recently. I thought this was important enough to display this publicly.

First, the characters rules. As I said in a MASS PM sent to all the moderators, the only valid character rules are the ones written on the site (how are members supposed to know rules that are not visible to them?)
Now, I will request you to be more lenient when it comes to the rules. Everyone has different feelings on what SHOULD be allowed or not, so stick to what is CLEARLY written.

So yes, "Sparkle Dogs" should be allowed, because A LOT of people do like them. Cats characters on Balto Source should be allowed too, because A LOT of people can like seeing something more varied, a character that's not just another wolf or dog. (unless someone is not in good faith and is posting ONLY cats characters...) We can't just go and make a list of EVERY species that are allowed or not, on EVERY site.

In the long term, there will be categories, which will allow pretty much everything to be accepted, but put into different categories. So that each visitors can then filter the categories he/she doesn't want to see. (like sparkledogs or different species, for example) Because, after all, what is the REAL problem behind sparkledogs for example? It is that you DONT want to see them PERSONALLY. And again, each person has different views on what they want to see or not.
In the meantime, I'm asking the mods to be too restrictive on what is accepted.

As for JerseyCaptain issues with Togo : I have to admit all this gives me a headache. I did not answer on this yet because I wanted to take the time to read everything properly.
Yes, I'm still planning to add a better moderation system, with automated warnings etc...Until then, mods should either use the external forums, or the mods forums on each site to keep tracks of them.
JC's someone with very strong opinions, who sticks to them and always want to have the final word. And by doing so, he just irritates anyone who "dare" answer to his messages. JC, honestly, when you see that you're annoying most people, can't you just *drop it* and move to something else? It's also valid to the others. When you see a topic's going nowhere, wouldn't it to better to stop?

Come on people, you're supposed to have fun here! Not give headhaches to the others!!!

So here's what I think : yes, from what I read, JC's attitude deserved a ban. He can be very resourceful and posts very interesting articles, but when it comes to the forums, he just doesn't know when to END an argument. To his defense, I don't think he does that on "purpose" : he just doesn't realize how much his messages can get irritating.
My suggestion : now that it's clear to everyone, I will give him a last chance. Please do the necessary to remove all the warnings and the ban from him. But, at the very instant he gets into a new argument in a topic, this warrants a warning, and 3 warnings a ban. And if that happens, the ban should be on the forums only - not the site.

You know, allowing demented sparkledogs on here is plain lame.

Piano --> Whatever mods were doing before was extremely confusing. They only accepted "good" characters or whatever. (Heck, my character Cobalt had a son "Steele Jr." and he freaking died after like three weeks xD But they allowed him because he still played a big part in everyone's life. So I don't know why they wouldn't accept others like that.)

They weren't accepting lazy characters or lazy designs (people just using MS Paint to color grey over Aleu) And they weren't accepting characters who were unconvincingly connected to Balto (like someone was just saying they saw Balto once or whatever without having any real connection to the universe)

But since they're allowing sparkledogs, its almost like they'll accept ANYTHING to ANY Source now. So people could connect Tale Spin to Princess and the Frog now if they wanted, seeing as apparently no one had any boundaries to keep them apart. No sense for organization, it seems.

Cat-
Yes, I do see your point there. =/ When I look at this again and read what people are saying I'm beginning to understand. I'm thinking that there perhaps should be some boundaries put in place... As you mentioned, this is a Balto fan site... But then I think that before it was somewhat unclear what was classified as a "Sparkle Dog" and what wasn't. There was never a set guide with characters anyway, which I think there should have been to help us prevent having our characters deactivated...
Example:
I got a message through yesterday saying that one of my characters was deactivated because "history needs to be 5 at least lines". I've never read this in the rules and I would genuinely like to know where it says this (not because I'm being difficult or annoying, but simply because I want to see with my own eyes the solid written rules). If I'm missing this rule and it's written somewhere then it's quite likely that I'm missing others and I want to make it right. (I've queried this with the mod, but haven't yet received a response.)

Also, what if the character is too young to have a history? Or what if it would ruin the plot for a fan story if all the history was written up? It all seems to be a matter of opinion really and I'm not sure there will ever be a way of making this right- What I mean to say is that if bright red and yellow dogs are allowed (as they are just exaggerated versions of colours, as seen in the Balto movie) then does that mean that blue/purple dogs are okay? (As they are usually just exaggerated greys (aside from the bright blue and purple dogs))... And what about collars? As I've seen people's characters being rejected due to an overly colourful collar or something of the sort.
Looking at this again it seems to me that the whole character section needs revising and some proper rules ought to be laid.

One thing I must mention, however, I am still unable to see this turning into "Sparkle Source". Ever. (Unless, of course, the members against it leave.) Amongst 40 new characters the other day I only saw 3 sparkle dog characters... So although I see what everyone is saying, I don't think that it will be a big problem- I'm yet to be proved wrong. (I also haven't been looking at images and drawing, but if I included them then I would once again give a mention to those horrible Anthros (my opinion only, please don't take offense! I'm not one to think someone's an idiot just because they like something that I don't. ^^))

For now I suppose I'm just neutral. I don't fully support either side and am just trying to look at this from all angles. I have my personal opinions, but I have no idea what it's like running a site like this or what this Sparkle Dog thing could turn into. At the end of the day this is Steet's site and these are just my opinions.

(By the way, I'm sorry if this comment seems a little mixed up. Just tossing random thoughts about really. ^^;)

Rock of Ages
What Cat & JC have been saying = truth.

WHY can't you be happy with having a good fan site for the movie(s) you enjoy?
Is it REALLY that important to stick every character you create on here?
Is it truly, honestly THAT hard to keep to FAN characters?

Really?

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
Cat -- man, what a great way to put into words what a lot of people, who are very much against sparkle dogs on this site, are feeling and perhaps cannot delineate as well as you have!

I mean, I know there are those of us who can understand the attraction (for some I guess) of doing sparkle dogs. And hey -- that's fine. Everyone should be able to be into whatever it is that makes them happy. But HOW FAR backwards does this site have to bend before it falls right over onto its keister? IS it a fan site for some animated movies, or an art gallery? It certainly was not originally designed to be an art gallery, even though fan art has dominated it over time. Nevertheless, MOST of the fan art has been limited, over time, to relevant art -- things which have relevance to the movies this site deals with.

With sparkle dogs (and, in my opinion, mates and "packs") the site is losing touch with its identity and its original purpose, and that is a bad thing. No fan site can be all-encompassing in order to suit small segments of its membership, or certain age groups. There HAVE to be SOME defined limits. Several people already have listed sites which cater to art and allow people to join up and post theirs. On Animation Source, they can still post links to memberships on art sites (and galleries) if they wish to promote their work, or even share it. THAT'S where the line ought to be drawn. Otherwise Animation Source stops being a true fan site, and becomes an art gallery site (again, personally, I happen to think it's already there, but...). Sheesh. It shocks me that those who are into sparkle dogs don't GET it. Those things don't HAVE to be here. But they certainly can link to galleries on art sites, where they can post such stuff, if they want people here to see such things that they created. That should be more than enough.

And your obscure but clever reference to "wolfaboos"? ROFL DON'T get me started on those ding-dongs... :icon297:

Luxray FTW!!!
Even though I don't mind sparkledogs on here that much, I probably won't make any really bright-colored ones. I'll probably stick with a shade of blue-grey instead of neon-green or sky-blue. xD

There are other sites other than dA too. Like Fanart-central, or sheezy-art.
