If by chance it does "go as far as tracing", then it's no longer considered referencing. Simple as that.

Referencing can go as far as tracing, though. If one, like I said before, were to learn shapes, structure, ect, they could trace over the "reference" to get a better understanding of how the product works/was made. Also, saying I "clearly don't understand referencing is" is, in itself, an insult. I do know what referencing is, as a matter of fact, but I also know that there can be other ways to reference.

Referencing is when you look at a picture and try to draw what you see. Tracing is when you take a picture, put something on top of it--be it real paper or a new digital layer--and, well, trace over the lines showing through.
