Balto overview

Overview

Balto is an animated film, released in 1995 and produced by the Universal / Amblimation studios.

BaltoThe film follows such films as An American Tail or Land Before Time from the same studio, which share common points with the Disney animated films, and were released during the golden age of traditional western animation.

The story of Balto deals with wolves and dog sledding, and is based on true facts that happened in 1925 in Nome, Alaska, where diphteria, a fatal disease, occured.
Finish line
Two low-budget sequels to Balto have been released to date, being direct-to-video sequels unlike the original.

This site aims to give the growing Balto fan community everything to share their passion!

More info

Balto is a feature-length film, produced by the Amblimation studios from Steven Spielberg, known for several other animated films such as "An American Tail", "Fievel Goes West" or "Land Before Time".

Amblimation

Released in 1995 in the USA, and mid-1996 in Europe, the movie didn't attract the crowd and didn't encounter the deserved success. That's the reason it is not much known compared to Disney or even Dreamworks movies, and yet...

Based on real facts, this cartoon relate the story of Balto, a brave sled dog, who brought back an antidiphtheria serum in order to save children, in Alaska (1925).

Many famous people have taken part in it, starting with Spielberg of course, as an executive producer (besides, we can even see a wink to "ET" in Balto), Simon Wells as the director/producer, and James Horner as the soundtrack composer (" Titanic ", " Braveheart ", " Alien "...and all the other Amblimation movies)

Nowadays, Amblimation has disappeared, in fact just after the release of this film, and the studios had been retaken with the help of an old Disney director for the conception of another animated movie, "The Prince of Egypt". And so was born Dreamworks...

love how balto howls. Love thw whiye wolf scene. It was so terrible how Steele only cared about being the town hero instead of worring about eh kids. Balto worried about the kids. He didn't care about being the hero he wanted to save rosie. Balto and Jenna are perfect together. :icon47: Jenna should have told Steele to keep out of her and balto's life. :icon329: but it was good Balto and jenna are so cute together

Amazing movie, I really thought it was great considering they added a "relationship" with Balto and Jenna. I thought they made the style a signature style of drawing the characters. The backgrounds were amazing, as well adding a evil character in the movie spiced it up. 5 stars.

Hi, I'm new here to this site but not to Balto. This is a great movie and I wish it became a TV series (like for Cartoon Network) and starred the original voice cast from the movie with the same character appearances.

Amblimation actually made only three feature length animated films. The films are:

1. An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (A sequel that was better than the original)
2. We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (Amblimation's first and only bad film)
3. Last but not least...Balto! (Amblimation's best film and unfortunately, their last... )

Amblimation wasn't involved in the 1986 Don Bluth film "An American Tail" or Bluth's 1988 film "The Land Before Time", the studio was founded by Steven Spielberg in 1991 as an animation studios arm for Amblin Entertainment and Simon Wells was a director for all three movies listed above. There was one short lived TV series called "Fievel's American Tails". Just to correct you, Amblimation didn't do "An American Tail" nor "The Land Before Time".

The best traditionally animated film ever! Nothing can topple it! It is an absolute 10 out of 10 film! But too bad that it had all its lightning stolen by a computer animated film, and that was Toy Story. This led to the disestablishment of Amblimaton due to financial reasons and from what I researched, the films they made didn't do too well at the box office. Even though I love Toy Story, but I hate what Disney and Pixar did to this film's performance. If Toy Story was pushed to mid 1996, then Balto would have done incredible at the box office and video sales would fly through the roofs of stores and there would probably be two high-budget theatrical sequels released instead of two low-budget direct to video sequels. Balto, I think, is way much better than Toy Story and the only film that comes close to Balto in my opinion is The Prince of Egypt which was a masterpiece. In fact, Simon Wells who directed Balto was also one of the three directors of The Prince of Egypt. I always wondered to myself, what would Balto look like if it was made at the studios of DreamWorks. I myself would expect it to be even more visually impressive with a more epic ending, than what we actually have. But, Balto still is and will always be to me, the best traditionally animated film ever devised.
