Types of Names

Question :

I was wondering what types of names were used around "Balto's time" or more specifically in Alaska around the 1920's?

I really don't think say Japanese names really work (I've seen several of these for characters) and I'm not too sure on the use of Inuit names either.

I want to keep my characters somewhat realistic I guess you could say for the time period...

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
My research into the time period, meaning the early turn of the twentieth century into the mid twentieth (during Balto's time) shows that, by and large, most dogs had pretty common English names...the kinds of names you'd imagine they'd have nowadays. Often even human names. It was VERY unusual, and exceedingly rare, for dogs to have Inupiat (Eskimo) or Russian names. Unless they were owned by those people. If you want to maintain a certain dedication to historical accuracy, I'd suggest not over-thinking it or worrying too much, and just go with a relatively common European name, rather than some of the silliness usually seen in fan character naming.

I would imagine that names in that region weren't any different than from any other place. As most of the people in Nome, I think, weren't native to the region.

Here is a list of older names:

No matter what fandom and how inaccurate it is, there is always someone who names their characters with Japanese names x

Some names of known dogs from this time were: Balto, Togo, Fritz, Calamity Jane (named after historical people), Fox, Baldy, Babe, Siwash, Wolf. Most of them sound like regular dog names.

For example Balto's children, Aleu and Kodi are named after the places in Alaska. And I think Inuit names sound okay for wild animals.
