I can tell you one thing : that's not intended. It's just the result of the low animation budget outsourced to asian animation facilities.

Remember the fact that he doesn't have yellow eyes in the first sequel? Well that was because the american staff forgot to add that on the artworks models of the characters they sent to Wang. From the Phil Weinstein interview :

Quote:
steet : Why did Balto eyes turned white in Balto 2?

PW : That was a mistake on the character model. There are so many things to keep track of on a movie production that sometimes the most obvious things get overlooked.
We fixed that in Balto 3!

Wang is a Taiwan facility who produced the animation - and BTW, produced some for many, many sequels and series, including Talespin (the worse-looking episodes) and the ADGTH series...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Film_Productions

So not as much research has been made to make it look like the original one, which explains the graphical differences between the original (produced mostly in Amblimation's United Kingdom facility, and partly in France) and the sequels.

Ok, so that was the "realistic" explanation, now you can make up your own theories :P

Yes, he is older. Balto 3 took place in 1928. Four years after 1925.

During the time of the serum run, Leonhard Seppala was claimed to have quoted Balto being six years-old during that time. This would put his birth date back to 1919. So, around this time in the film, Balto would be around 9-years of age.

Nine years still isn't that old for a Siberian Husky, or Alaskan Malamute according to a few Kennels I have looked at. They usually retire from racing between 10 and 12 and live to be about 14-16.

I wasn't saying he was old, just throwing in some information. I know that isn't considered really old; more like a middle-aged dog. Though when it comes to retirement, it depends on the dog really. Take Togo for example. He was 12 years-old during the serum run! He was retired in 1927 at the age of 14, and died only 3 years later in 1929 at the age of 16.

Balto looks older is because of poor animtion and his voice was deeper as they change a new voicer, although it does some sense that Balto seems like he became older due to all this changes, which to me makes it more realistic a little.
