Important Update:

I have recieved a message from the LT Governor of Alaska concerning my petition!!!

the message

"Dear Jacob,

I wanted to let you know I’ve shared your message with the Lt. Governor’s chief of staff and members of the Alaska Historical Commission (of which the Lt. Governor is the chair). I’ll let you know when I hear back from them.

Thank you,

Colleen M. Cox

Today I recieved another email from the Lt. Governor of Alaska Mike Treadwell the email reads as follows

"Dear Jacob,

I shared your message with the Alaska Historical Commission (AHC), who have said they welcome your interest and efforts in preserving Balto. I learned that a few years ago the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center was able to borrow Balto from the Cleveland Museum for exhibit, and that the dog was in poor shape and in need of conservation. AHC said that they could send a letter of concern, but that no member of the commission is a professional museum conservator. They suggest your request might be sent to Museums Alaska and/or the Alaska Historical Society for these groups to consider mentioning in their newsletters. I will also sent AHC the address for your online petition so they could include a note on it in the Office of History and Archaeology’s newsletter Heritage.

Please let me know if you are still working on this effort, and I would be happy to ask Lt. Governor Treadwell and AHC if they would write letters of support.

Best regards,

Colleen M. Cox

I am very pleased with the progress on the petition. If you had told me I would have 105 signatures from people all over the world and the support of the LT Governor of Alaska and the Mayor of Nome herself I would have said your crazy. But its true that hard work pays off. Please continue to sign and keep this topic fresh.

Back when the dogs (including Togo and Fritz, each at separate times based upon the year each died), they were stuffed and mounted not as a measure of cruelty or disrespect, but to preserve some bit of them for posterity. People back then believed they were honoring the dogs and also helping to keep their memories alive for future generations. That was the motivation behind the mounts. There was no cruelty, disrespect, or disregard for the dogs in it.

I haven't had the privilege of seeing the Balto display in the museum yet (or the statue in central park, but plan on seeing both). It sure would be a dissappointment to travel all that way to see a dinky display for such an inspiring hero. The staff at the museum probably figure that most people don't know who he is and don't really care, so they don't feel they should amp up his display. I hope we can find a way to show them that people come from all over just to see him and that we know he deserves better.
