I haven't had the privilege of seeing the Balto display in the museum yet (or the statue in central park, but plan on seeing both). It sure would be a dissappointment to travel all that way to see a dinky display for such an inspiring hero. The staff at the museum probably figure that most people don't know who he is and don't really care, so they don't feel they should amp up his display. I hope we can find a way to show them that people come from all over just to see him and that we know he deserves better.
I can tell you that there is at least one person at the museum, by the name of Lee Gambol, with whom I have had many productive conversations about the Balto exhibit and about Balto's history. And she cares very much about the dog himself, the mount, and the history. But she has higher authorities to answer to, as does everyone who attends that particular exhibit. And whatever decisions the museum executives and curators wish to make, regarding the disposition of the exhibit, are theirs, and not Lee's or the other caretakers and staff.
