Felidae is based on the 1989 novel by Akif Pirinçci, who co-wrote the script. The story centers around domestic house cat Francis and the grisly feline murders taking place in his new neighborhood. This film is NOT for children. It evolves murder, bad language, sex, gore, etc. I found it in English on youtube, there are 8 parts of the movie. Watch at your own risk! No I'm kidding. If you are older then 13 you will be able to watch this film. It is VERY good and it has been my favorite movie for about...three years.

A cat named Francis moves with his owner to a new neighborhood, and no sooner has he set paw into his new home than he is greeted by the slain body of another cat. Local street cat Bluebeard is convinced that this, and the other three recent killings, must have been committed by a "can-opener" - cat slang for a human.
Francis disagrees, and as he finds out more about the victims, is sure that not only is the murderer a cat, but that the killings are all connected by one common factor - each of the victims was sexually aroused at the time of death.
He is aided in his investigations by fierce, gluttonous Bluebeard, blind but wise Felicity, and the computer-using cat Pascal. His sleep is haunted by terrifying and vivid nightmares, which offer insight into the mind of the murderer.
Francis soon runs afoul of the local bully Kong and the suicidal Claudandus Sect, and he discovers that his new home was once the site of a laboratory owned by Doctor Pretorius. Pretorius, in his search to create a bonding glue that would heal any flesh wound, performed painful and deadly experiments on countless cats, including the legendary Claudandus. After Pretorius' death, the lab became a meeting site for the Claudandus Sect, who believe that Claudandus was imbued with powers that could help the cat species evolve into something greater.
It is eventually revealed that Pascal is actually the legendary Claudandus, and is responsible for the murders. Using his owner's computer to keep a listing of every cat in the city, Claudandus is systematically culling the cats he deems unworthy of breeding with his 'new breed.'
Discovering this, Francis destroys the computer containing the information on the listed murders, subsequently causing an electrical fire. Claudandus is killed in the ensuing battle, and Francis escapes the fire with the injured Bluebeard.
Francis resumes his normal life while pursuing a relationship with Nhozemptekh, one of the "new" cats bred by Claudandus. He also muses that, perhaps, things would be better if mankind acted more like Felidae.

Defiantly an amazing film. Honesty I was stunned by the level of the subject matter and that only made me love it even more. Griping from start to finish with a wonderful film noir style, Francis seems to be a mixture of James Bond and Sherlock Holmes. I also love the very stylish and surreal dream-sequences, and the joke about the "Aristocats".
I am at a lost of where to put this film, formerly Don Bluth was where I basically made the marker of "Dark" animation but this film triumphs anything Bluth has done in terms of darker subject matter yet I also feel it is unique and we will never get something like this again for a long time. This film most certainly deserves recognition in it's own right as a mature animated film, something I think which has only met with failure in the past.

I never saw Felidae, but I had planned on watching it. I had also planned on watching Watership Down and The Plague Dogs. I will definately take a look into it and try and watch it by this weekend.

I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. I hate the part where Fransis finds the old video and his dream with Mendel...oddly, that dream makes freequent apperences in my Felidae AMV's.
It's accualy a good movie thou, I do enjoy it. Im a huge Pascal fan <3

Definetely NOT what you'd give your eight-year-old child to watch. But I enjoyed Felidae, thought it had a rather touchy subject and could've been one of those movies no one wanted to remember.
But, it'll forever be a classic to me, probably as much as Plague Dogs.

Well it is based off the book that had those sceens you hid under the spoiler tag. There was a sceen not in the book and it was:
Hidden text : click to show
that Fransis had a dream that Deep Purple, the one found in the garage, was pulling kittens out of the gash in his neck. I belive that was the only thing left out from the book.

I watched the movie and afterwards I read the book (which is also amazing and also gives more information). I was shocked by graphic nature of it, but as I realized that it wasn't a kids movie I appreciated its mature themes and loved the fact that they were carried out so well in a movie about cats.
I hated Sarafina (the designer breed; she has a longer, egyptian name but I forgot how to spell it), though; i wished that Felicity has lived, she'd be a much better match for Francis...although considering how quickly he went to Sarafina and then asked her name, i'm not too sure I like all of Francis's morals either....
But, anyway, I'm ranting; it's a great movie, very creative and I find it hilarious that its considered the equivalent of PG-13 in Germany. :3

I will definately take a look into it and try and watch it by this weekend. Interesting that you mention these two movies together with Felidae since they've all got one thing in common: They're primary examples for the Animation Age Ghetto. Y'know, animation is always for kids and for kids only. In Felidae's case, people watch it, expect to see a second Aristocats with cute and funny widdle kitties, get loads of sex and gore shoved into their faces, and then base their judgement on how it's unsuitable for kids and not like Aristocats at all. Especially in its country of origin, Germany, people totally fail to see that Felidae has never been meant to be anything like Aristocats. Besides, it was made by the same guy who gave us the Derrick animated feature, the animated version of Walter Moers' Little A**hole, and Dieter – Der Film. And the FSK 12 (= PG-13) label on the DVD isn't just decoration, it's there for a reason, well, lots of reasons in this case.

My opinion on Felidae can be summed from here: Roi Doberwolf wrote: This movie was just... dark. A murder mystery with lots of killing and in not very pretty ways. ...well unless you're into that kind of thing. Not very kid friendly in other ways either. It was a good film with good animation, but it just about turned my stomach at times. I did really like the characters. I find it funny that Francis's curiosity didn't kill him. [hur hur hur] Also really liked Bluebeard for some reason. He was a very foul tempered feline.

I actually watched it when I was 11 or so...*is bombarded by a bunch of angry parents*
I was just looking for animal based movies. Cat s_x part was a little iffy to me then, same with the murders and Pascal's death. Like everyone else, I watched it on youtube ^^ Pascal <3 I'm not a big fan of Francis though.
