I am at least pleased that, very recently, he and I had some civil conversation. I would have deeply regretted it had there not been a chance for that before this happened. It's a shame that time for more positive exchanges hadn't happened. But that's sometimes how it goes. Sadly. Still, I'm pleased that there was at least a small opportunity.

I didn't see any list of fatalities on the news but, honestly, I don't know that it would have even been shown here in the U.S. I was aware of the accident and basic news coverage (and footage) from internet and television news. But as I noted, until I saw the comments in the "latest site news", and then was able to see the Facebook post I mentioned, and then was able to talk with Saske and Rainbowkat in the last hour, I knew nothing about this, and honestly didn't know what to make of it. It was while I was talking with those two that I stumbled upon this forum topic...

Hearing those news really shocked me. Now as I feel a little more calmed, I finally get myself to write something.
Gatel was such a great person. Always nice, respectful and willing to help. He was very fun to talk and always supportive when I neede to. I wish we had a chance to get to know each other more and I can't believe we'll never get to talk again. Animation Source lost an amazing member.
Rest in peace, friend.

In the very short time that I knew him, Gati was always the fun-loving guy that it just felt easy to be around. I'm honestly shocked by this, I never expected that out of all the people in the country, that Gatell would be one of them. I'm just at a loss for words. All I can say is that he will be remembered, by me at least, forever.
Rest in peace, Gati. I hope you're in a happier place now. I hope with my heart of hearts that you didn't suffer.

Now, with finding out of Gatell's death, there are a number of unanswered questions that follow. I apologize if this is too soon to ask, but what will happen to his photography business? What will happen to his tutorial site that he was working on? What will happen to all of the other things that Gatell worked for? Only time will tell, I guess.

Jockris and Gatell owned that photography business together so I am sure she'll either take care of it or will end it. Which considering it was BOTH their thing she'll be more likely to put a stop to it.
As for his other project I think they will stay as they are, unfinished.

I was shocked, to say the least. And it is very sad, and very unfortunate. I didn't particularly get along well with him up until the last month, and then it was only luke warm at best. But I can say that I am deeply saddened by this, and I would like to, in my own small way, offer my condolences to any of his friends and family who may see this, and especially to Jockris, with whom he had a rather more marked relationship. I have not even heard word about her yet, but I hope she is safe and has not been involved in that terrible accident.

Jockris is fine (physically, of course) she wasn't in the train was traveling alone Gatell and was on the way back home from working with a friend.

How did anyone find out about this?

Jockris, his girlfriend, came online and sent out PMs to his friends (that's how I found out) and announced the tragical loss in the shoutbox. And from there it spread over the site.

It is a great thing to hear that you two seemingly got on terms with each other.

Guys, if Gatell would see this he surely would call us crazy for the big amount of respect and kindness we are showing towards him. He#s surely tell us that he's not worth is but he is. He was a great friend, fun to be around and always there to help, not to forget he's been a great artist. Plus, he had such an uplifting personality.

I remember how, at the very beginning of our friendship, he was browsing through my photo gallery on Deviantart and asked me what kind of professional camera I use. Needless to say he was quite suprised to figure out that I own just a simple compact camera. He encouraged me to consider getting a more professional one. But he didn't do it in a "compact cameras are lame, look what I can do with my fancy, expensive, professional one.". No, he's been showing me example photos he did with his and what I would be able to do with such an advanced camera.

He always tried to be as nice and respectful as possible. he was here to contribute to the fandom and make friends. And I think he did sucseed with that as clearly we all who are replying to this topic have considered him a friend (Or a friendship worthy person for those who never/rarely got to talk to him).

I may not be religious but if there would be an afterlife our dear, fun loving friend surely would rock it, don't you think?

Well, even though I didn't along with Gate, I was shocked to learn last night that he passed away in that awful train wreck. So may he rest in peace, and my sympathies to his family and friends.

Dear Gatell,

I'm filled with GREAT pain and regret that we didn't get to know each other while we still had the chance...you've always complimented my work and because of my heavy schedule outside of the source, never had a chance to say thank you...which fills me with great regret and great guilt...you were always very kind to me when we briefly spoke, and you were a great friend to many. Your work was so beautiful and grand and I've always admired it. We have become one big family on the source that it brings great damage and sadness when we lose a member. I just wish we could've known each other longer and become great acquaintances..

All my love and prayers go to you, your lover who was also a member on this site, and your family.

For some reason...I'm getting the feeling that it won't be the last time we see or hear of you. Until that day comes, and only God knows when, I'm looking forward to meeting you again.

I never really talked to him, but I knew his art and his presence on the site. Rest in peace man. We all love you.

Gate was a great guy. He really strived to understand English a lot, so he could hang out with people that he could call his friends. I remember once, he brought up how much of a hard time he had understanding some of us because we used a lot of big words - nothing offensive in any way, just kind of funny when you sat down and realized, you DO use a lot of big words.

I didn't know him for very long, which is something I regret. A lot of times, we talked about his acting and modeling career, and he actually gave me some suggestions to further mine along. He was very enthusiastic about...well, everything, and I think we need more people in the world like that. To lose even one - and a great one, at that - is such a bitter experience.

Gate will be missed, by us, by Jockris, by the whole world. Gone, but not forgotten.

Horrible news. Sadly, I never really got to know Gateliyou.
However, his artwork was always mind blowing and beautiful.
This is truly shocking, and extremely tragic. I will miss his images and drawings, like the rest of the users on the site that value a talented artist.
In short, rest in peace Gateliyou, he'll always be cherished by this site :)

I never knew Gattel, but my condolences are with his friends and family. It definitely brings home that these events do not just claim the lives of the unknown, but of real people that you may know.

On a note about the tragedy itself, the train was going more than double the 50Mph speed limit. Absolutely terrible.

Yeah, I heard about that. What was that conductor thinking at the time :!: :?:

(Train driver, not the conductor)

The driver has had a history of posting pictures of him going over the speed limit, according to some news reports.

That's the quintessential definition of a bonafide infantile moron.

I never knew Gattel (actually had to search his name on the sources to become familiar with him), but I don't think he'd want the 'blame game' tossed around in the topic devoted to his memory. The party to blame is in custody (according to previous posts), and we can only hope the justice system in that area will settle things once and for all so that his family and friends can get some peace. Meanwhile let's not loose sight of the real picture here. We lost a great member. I regret not being too involved with the AS community more now. From what I hear he was an upstanding person and will be greatly missed by those who knew him, loved him, and had yet to do either. Rest in peace, Gattel. And my condolences to your loved ones.
