(Sorry again for delaying. I've been having trouble lately trying to figure out how I'd like to see this end on Keso's part. I know he has to lose in the end, and I want him to cause as much pain as possible, but I'm still not sure if I want to continue to use him, or if I should kill him off. He's a great antagonist.)

While Nexxus was desperately holding on to life in hopes of warning the wolfdog, Keso was crossing the border of the second Hailstorm encampment, a sadistic smile playing along his lips. So far everything was going according to plan. Balto would eventually find the body and track his scent here, of that he was sure. After all, even now he was surely becoming half-crazed without his mate, and even the tiniest hint of the scent would drive him wild with worry and anger. No doubt he'd lose it at least a couple of times on the way here and be lost to anguish and despair until he actually was able to find hints of her again. And when he got here, ready to fight for his lover, he'd be so incoherent that it wouldn't take much to over power him. Truly, the black wolf had thought this through quite well.

"Cale, report," he barked as soon as the torn, but conscious form of his white beta met his gaze.

"Sir, the scouts brought her back just a short while ago. They said that it seemed Nexxus did as instructed, though he delayed."

"Hmm. No matter, that problem has been taken care of. She is down in the den, I presume?" Cale gave only a stiff nod in response to the question and the Alpha's eyes filled with venomous intent. "Ready the wolves and have the scouts posted at most ten minutes from the border. Our little friend will find us, and when he does I'd like to be alerted. This thorn in our side will soon be terminated and we can get back to conquest. But until then..." He trailed off, glancing meaningfully, viciously, at the den. "Don't disturb me."

The black wolf sauntered off, leaving the beta with nothing more to go on and then proceeded to enter the den. The tunnel down the main chamber was much shorter here, and quite cramped considering. Being as big as he was, he had trouble fitting and had to move slowly, but he finally reached the main chamber, which was about the same size as the other. The light was almost nonexistent, save for what little filtered in past his body. But he could see the outline of the husky female clearly. His eyes narrowed into a glare and a small growl poured from his lips.

He noted her fine, red markings and didn't deny that they did stand out, even despite her wounds and the dirt matted into her once pristine coat. But, how on earth could any self-respecting wolf love such a frail, cowardly creature as this? Her legs were far feebler than his own, and any wolf in his pack, even feebler than most of her breed. She was thin and tiny, and would hardly even be able to defend herself against attack. Despite her bravado when standing up to Keso and the others, she had nothing to back it up with, and certainly not the instinct to become submissive to those superior.

He scoffed as he thought, 'Beauty is a wonderful asset, but it doesn't help a bit in these forests.' With a pang, that thought brought him back to thoughts of Una. This troublesome little dog had forced her into his mind several times lately, and it almost irritated him. But as he thought of her, he couldn't help but lose himself just a little to thoughts of her, and his own deep despair returned. Instead of facing his sadness, he'd changed it to anger and rage. He hadn't allowed himself to feel after her death and time had, instead of healing that wound, simply augmented it.

His thoughts drifted more and he remembered times they'd been together - so blissful and tranquil. There would be no bringing her back, and he knew this well. And with all of the terrible things he'd done, he would certainly be barred from ever seeing her again when he finally did leave this world. All of these swirling echos tormented him and with a deep sigh, he closed his eyes and imagined Una, her face and loveliness, and the compelling force that had pulled the two strong wolves together.

With only the use of one eye, Devious peered interestedly in the direction of Cale and Keso. Who ever Cale had gotten into a scrap with, he'd sure done a number on him. Half his face was a sickening color. But, who was he to talk? At least the two now had something in common. But, as skilled as Cale was and how tough he managed to be, he was always over shadowed by Keso.
It was only natural. Cale was a beta, Keso was the alpha. But, much like Cale and Keso, he was always over shadowed by Cale. So, the few accomplishments he'd managed to make in service to Keso seemed to go unnoticed. It was a vicious circle.

Even though his hearing was only able to pick up certain keywords in their conversation, he was much more interested when he observed Keso as he made his way to the den where they had brought back the bait for this 'Balto'.

He didn't allow his mind to venture into the realm of possibilities that that wolf would do to her. Instead, his turned away from the two and turned his attention back to the rest of the wolves. Because he was not ranked very high up, he was rarely given personal instructions to take care of. And just the extent that Keso was going to to get this one wolf made him sure that this would be far to important for him to allow any chance of failure. So, he resigned himself to just accepting what duties he was responsible for and doing them well.

Right now though, his only dutie was to keep watch. So, that's what he did. He padded around slightly, the wind blowing through his sleek black pelt, paying close attention for any signs of this wolf dog Keso was so keen to get.

"Balto, no!" Kikki screamed, watching in disbelief as he vanished beneath the water's surface.
"He's drowning!" Krystal cried. "We have to save him!"
When she tried to turn towards the cliff's edge, though, Kikki blocked her way.
"You're not going anywhere," she said firmly.
"What?! You're just going to let him - "
"STOP!" Kikki cried in alarm.
Obediently, Krystal dug her paws into the near-frozen earth and skidded to a halt just before the cliff that ended in front of them. Both females looked down and found, to their dismay and despair, that the cliff was much higher than anything they'd planned for. With jumping out of the question, they could only watch the river as it approached a series of violent rapids.

Already, the cries of Kikki and Krystal were fading fast. Each moment, Balto could feel his body growing weaker. The water around him darkened, and he felt his legs brush the bottom. He tried to swim, tried to kick off the bottom in a desperate bid to reach the surface, but only succeeded in sapping away what little oxygen he still held. For a few fleeting seconds, he realized that there was a fate worse than blindness: The certainty that his eyes were working perfectly and the realization that there was nothing around him to see.

Suddenly, his front legs smacked against a rock outcropping. He felt his body twist and turn in the water for only an instant before he was smashed against another, larger rock, and all the air he had left was crushed from his lungs. He felt his body begin to spasm from lack of oxygen. Just as he felt his last thoughts leaving him, he felt the water shift around him.

Before he could realize what had happened, he was thrown stomach-down onto a small stretch of sand along the river's edge. His first instinct was to gasp for air. Once his body was satisfied a second later, he coughed violently, spitting up an unhealthy amount of water. He breathed heavily, not bothering to open his eyes, not trying to move, only breathing. Then, his body, satisfied it was safe, let him slip into unconsciousness. The last thing he heard was a familiar voice crying out, "Uncle Borris! Uncle Borris, come quick!"

Meanwhile, miles and miles away, Jenna found herself waking from one nightmare into another. Thought she tried to, she could not push the horrible images from her mind. In her dream, she had seen Balto drowning, using his last breath to cry out her name. Now, she turned her head to face the demon who had brought her here.

Yet, for a moment she was surprised. He did not seem to be looking at her at all. Though his eyes were open, they seemed to peer right through her, as though he was seeing something - or, perhaps, someone - else. But, she set her jaw and wiped all expression from her face, preparing for the coming onslaught. Keso's rage would not be long in holding.

Oh Balto, where are you?
