The only entry I have received for Mtaka yote, Hukosa yote, was Shivu!
I loved the drawing and the story behind it - a well deserved win!
I'll notify you of your prize!

Still a week left for Kila ndege huruka na mbawa zake and there's already been one amazing entry from Windhowler!

What does "Kila ndege huruka na mbawa zake" mean in Swahili? The reason why I haven't been making entries is because I turn off the rolling banners. But I hope I can make some entries soon!

Hi, Yearoo.
The phrase means ''Every bird flies with its own wings'' :)

The winner of 'Kila ndege huruka na mbawa zake' was of course Windhowler!

Time for another lesson methinks!
Numbers

In Swahili, learning the numbers is extremely easy.
Here are numbers 1-10
0 = Sifuri (see-foo-ree)
1 = Moja (moh-jah)
2 = Mbili (m-bee-lee)
3 = Tatu (tah-too)
4 = Nne (n-neh)
5 = Tanu (tan-oo)
6 = Sita (see-tah)
7 = Saba (sah-bah)
8 = Nane (nah-neh)
9 = Tisa (tee-sah)
10 = Kumi (koo-mee)

Now, for the numbers 11-19, you basically say in Swahili 10 and 1, 10 and 2, 10 and 3, etc.
Example:
15 = Kumi na tanu (koo-mee nah tan-oo)
16 = Kumi na sita (koo-mee nah see-tah)
17 = Kumi na saba (koo-mee nah sah-bah)

Get the idea?

The same sort of pattern occurs for the rest of the numbers.
20 = Ishirini (ee-shee-ree-nee)
21 = Ishirini na moja (ee-shee-ree-nee nah moh-jah)
etc.
30 = Thelathini (theh-lah-thee-nee) The 'th' is the soft 'th' sound as in the beginning of 'thanks'
40 = Arobaini (ah-roh-bah-ee-nee)
50 = Hamsini (hah-m-see-nee)
60 = Sitini (see-tee-nee)
70 = Sabini (sah-bee-nee)
80 = Themanini (theh-mah-nee-nee)
90 = Tisini (tee-see-nee)
100 = Mia moja (mee-ah moh-jah)
101 = Mia moja na moja (mee-ah moh-jah nah moh-jah)
163 = Mia moja sitini na tatu (mee-ah moh-jah see-tee-nee nah tah-too)
200 = Mia mbili (mee-ah m-bee-lee)
394 = Mia tatu tisini na nne (mee-ah tah-too tee-see-nee nah n-neh)

Simple!

Before I announce the winner tomorrow, I thought I'd post another lesson.

Mimi = I
Wewe = You (singular)
Yeye = S/he
Sisi = We
Ninyi = You (plural)
Wao = They

These are the basic pronouns, but these change when you want to use them in verbs.

They become:

I = ni-
You (sing.) = u-
S/he = a-
We = tu-
You (pl.) = m-
They = wa-

Here are some basic verbs:

-enda = go
-fanya = do
-itwa = be called
-ishi = live
-lala = sleep
-taka = want

However, the verbs above contain the verb root and a verb ending. The verb ending is always a vowel.
Example:

enda
end is the verb root and a is the verb ending.

To turn them into infinitives, you just put the word ku- before the verb.
Example:

kutaka = to want

Present Tense

The present tense marker is -na-
And the structure for forming a phrase goes:

Subject prefix + tense marker + verb root + basic ending

Examples:

Ni+na+fany+a = Ninafanya = I am doing

Tu+na+ish+i = Tunaishi = We are living

Wa+na+lal+a = Wanalala = They are sleeping
