So, who here has read the original Bambi book by Felix Salten? There's also a sequel, "Bambis Kinder" (Bambi's Children) that is a wonderful book as well.

darn it skul, you stole my topic idea XD, just kidding, but yeah I did read the book. I didn't know there was a sequel though. Disney did tone some things down though, like the hunter himself dying in the end.

I also didn't know there were actual books. The only book about Bambi that I've read is a children's book called Bambi Grows Up. It's basically the first movie shortened in book form, and I used to read it all the time as a kid; I LOVED Bambi with a passion! But wow I really want to read those books at some point in my life, now. Thanks for posting this!

I've never read the book myself, but I might have to look into reading them. ^_^

I read the first book and the sequel and definitely like the first one better although it was way sad. Where the movie made some things cute the book explained a ton of stuff and also explained stuff that the disney movie didn't. Guess that's only to be expected it being the original. Also Ronno was bigger in the story and had more to do with the main plot than in the movies, there was also another antagonist of Bambi although I can't remember his name. He was crippled or something. Also in the book Bambi and Feline were cousins and Feline was one of two twins so yes, many things were changed, altered and toned down for the film. I like the book personally and think that if you can get past the old English style of writing it is a very good read. I didn't mind it personally myself. It reminded me somewhat of Firebringer by David Clement Davies-another book I'd suggest. Most libraries have a copy of Bambi A Life in the Forest. I haven't seen any at most book stores as it's been in and out of print a few times.
I'll stop. I know I'm a nerd lol -grins-

I've read both, and I love them both. I'm thinking about writing an article for the Bambi Source about the sequel book actually!
To be honest, I like the sequel book about Bambi's twin fawns a little bit more than the original novel about Bambi's growing up journey. Yes, it's got flaws, but there's so much character development - not just for Bambi and Feline, but also for Geno and Gurri, their fawns. Talk about big hooves to fill! [yes, that was a hint!]
I recommend reading the book of Bambi and then watching the movie [though you can easily skip the "midquel" - it doesn't really add anything.] before reading the sequel book, if you can find a copy of it. It's a good thing to do if you're bored during the summer!
