In 2013's Despicable Me 2, super-despicable bad guy Gru has now become a not-so-despicable super dad!  Having adopted Margo, Edith and Agnes and, with their help, he has set a new course for his life.  Gru's abandoned the supervillain biz and become an entrepeneur, developing a line of jams and jellies which he hopes will provide secure income for his new family.  While Dr. Nefario tries to make the most of this innocuous situation, he's finding himself missing the old days of sinister plans and nefarious villainy.  Frustrated, he bids farewell to Gru and the minions, and heads off to a new job. 

Meanwhile, Gru finds himself rather unceremoniously recruited by the Anti-Villain League, a global organization which exists to fight major crimes.  The AVL wants Gru to help them find and capture a mysterious new supervillain who has stolen a very dangerous mutagenic formula, which can turn cute and fuzzy little animals into fearsome, indestructible purple monsters!  Gru goes undercover with AVL agent Lucy Wilde, but he will find some rather unsettling surprises in store for him...including how strangely familiar this new supervillain seems to be.
