Benizakura claimed the title of being the strongest dog in the world. At three years old he challenged Tsuna Arashi the undefeated champion in a fight that ended in a tie because it went past the 30 minute time limit. Benizakura lost both ears and the battle because Tsuna Arashi was the current champion and was able to keep his title with the tie. The determined Benizakura fought and hope of challeneging Tsuna Arashi again. He got sick of waiting and ran off to find Tsuna Arashi himself. When he found him, he was shocked and horrified that with Tsuna Arashi's old age he could no longer compete so he was used as a punching bag for young dogs learning to fight. Benizakura killed the young dogs and fled. Later he ended up with a new master that called him Don. He was nicknamed the Sea Beast and participated in bull fights
      Benizakura saves Cross on shore of Shikoku after she swam across the sea. His master wanted keep her as a pet. Later, Gin challenged Benizakura and inspired the fighting dog to join Ou's pack by displaying great courage facing death so calmly. Benizaura releases Cross from the chains so she can return to her pack. While fighting the allies of Akakabuto, Benizakura sacrifices his life by dragging down the bear mosa into a lake. His paw gets caught in the rope that is attached to Mosa while tying it around a log at the bottom of a lake. A bloody cherry blossom forms at the top of the lake symbolizing his life as a great male.

There is a short manga story about Benizakura's puphood featured in Shin Gaiden. Benizakura Hen shows Benizakura's mother, siblings and his first fights.
