Animation at the Box Office - March 21-23 | Tweet |

After spending a weekend at the top of the box office, Mr. Peabody and Sherman plummetted to 3rd Place, behind newcomers Divergent and Muppets Most Wanted. It took in about $11.7 million, which puts its total domestic gross to $81 million domestically and $183 million worldwide. That's not too bad at all, and it looks likely to close at over $100 million domestically/$250 million worldwide.
The Lego Movie also took a big hit from the new releases, as well as strong holdovers. After spending last weekend in the Top 5, it barely was able to stay in 9th Place, and earned just over $4 million. It seems that this box office hit is finally slowing down, but it has so far earned just shy of $244 million domestically and $390 million worldwide. In short, it is currently the highest-grossing film of the year, and we'll probably have to wait several more weeks before any other movie surpasses it.

Frozen was released on DVD last week, and its box office finally, after 18 weeks, slowed down. It dropped out of the Top 10 and currently sits at 13th Place, with $734,000. Its current domestic gross is almost $398 million (the target is $400 million, and a few theater scrapings here and there for the next few weeks should help it reach that goal). Its worldwide gross, thanks to a strong current run in Japan, has jumped to $1.049 billion. Remember, its target for worldwide is $1.063 billion, which Toy Story 3 holds. Once it passes that mark, it will become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, and it should reach that goal within the next two weeks. Most analysts predict it will eventually become the 9th highest-grossing film, passing The Dark Knight Rises, but that will still take about a month.
