Im thinking of making animations on my own and ive heard of this thing called 'Adobe Flash ' however I don't know if you have to buy it or download it. I also don't know what it is mainly for and what its like. So if you answer this question, can you please give me a link to a safe downloading site which you have tried?

You must know how to use key frames, frames that tell things were to move or change in animation.

You really don't need Flash to make animations, Gimp or photoshop would suffice. Besides, I don't think Flash can export to an gif file. Flash exports in the flash video format and quicktime MP4.

The world is moving away from Flash, I wouldn't recommend investing a penny into it. Especially since all of your content wouldn't work on ANY iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) and would work poorly on most mobile devices.
