What actually happened to Steele in Balto? I remember the dogs shut the door on him after realizing he lied. But what happened next, did they do anything to him?

Steele's fate is pretty much free to become whatever each viewer wants. There has been released deleted scenes where it shows that he was supposed to face a gruesome death, but I guess the animators thought it was too dark for a kids' show so they gave up on it.

Without that scene, you are free to believe what you want

Since Steele was the bully in the BALTO story, he got what he deserved by making up nonsense stories that BALTO died while trying to return with the vaccine cure during the pandemic outbreak in 1925 or whatever year the virus inflicted Nome, Alaska back then. In the end it was BALTO saving the day and probably getting back at Steele for insulting his honor, or maybe...forgave him for doing all the bad things to him.
