History:

Honour is a feral horse. Born in the New Forest in the south of England, she ran free, first with her parents and then with a band of other young horses, all under the age of 3 years old. As per local custom, every year a number of the young horses born in the New Forest were rounded up, penned and sold at auction. This kept the land safe from over population, and provided cheap ponies for sale. When she was barely 2 years old, Honour and her band were caught and penned for the local horse market. Many people came to the market to view and bid on the horses and ponies for sale. Some of them were farmers, looking for a pony to pull the cart to market. Others were horse dealers, looking for young animals to train and sell on for a profit. And others were from across the sea in Europe, either looking for a hardy British work horse or for horsemeat for the European food market. But Honour and her friends didn’t end up with any of these bidders.

An American woman and her English husband were in the country visiting his parents and had decided to go along to the horse market for entertainment. Upon seeing the scruffy colts and fillies for sale, and learning that they might end up at butchers’ shops across the English Channel, the kindly woman persuaded her husband to buy a pen of New Forest ponies and take them back to the States with them. Although her husband couldn’t see what use a bunch of feral ponies would be to them, he also had a kind heart and couldn’t bear the idea of these young horses being slaughtered for food. As a result, when he and his wife returned to North America at the end of the month, they took with them a band of unbroken New Forest ponies, amongst which was Honour.

The journey was long and gruelling, but eventually they arrived in the Western United States. The young ponies were put together into a corral and left to settle in. But an oversight had been made with the catch on the gate of their corral, and one of the colts managed, after a few attempts, to get his head under the catch and release it. Revelling in their new found freedom, the young horses burst out of the corral and galloped away into the open country beyond. Ever since, honour has been living wild and free.
