History
"My hoofs, carrying me through the plains, sounded as thunder in the sky. Though I lived among the Lakota, the wide open prairies were my home. Every spare minute I could be found there, trying to outrun my own shadow."
It was a cold morning in spring. The Lakota Village was filled in fog and you could only see a fewa meters ahead. It was very cold, even for this time in the year. A layer of snow lay upon the land as a white blanket; a sign that the bitter cold would not end soon. It was very quiet in the village. All men were still inside their teepees, huddled together to stay warm. Only a few tough warriors stood outside to protect the village against potential enemies. The air filled with a cough coming from one of the warriors, and then it was silent again.
The Lakota horses stood near the edge of the village. Winter had been tough for them as well; some did not get through. They stood there, huddled together, numb from the cold. Suddenly one of them, a young paint mare, looked up. Her long mane were covered with frost, and when she shook her head, the frost crunched. Her name was Rain. She was the only one that missed one of the more experienced mares, Tiponi. She looked around, but the fog was so heavy that she could only see the horses nearest to her. She called for her softly, not to wake the others, but there was no answer. She started to worry because one needed warmth to survive, and the only warmth at the moment was with the other horses. She decided to leave the safe place of warmth to find Tiponi.
The fog was so thick that even the Lakota standing outside could not see Rain leaving the village. She found a dim track, leaving the other horses. She followed it outside the village towards a strip of trees. And there she found them; Tiponi, the strong mare, with a newborn foal. Rain smiled when the mare licked the tiny creature between its ears, but her concerns immediately returned. It was still very cold. Though the fog grew less thick, a dark and ominous sky came near. She took a tuft mane from Tiponi and pulled softly; it was time to return to the village. The mare stood up immediately and nuzzled Rain for a moment to ease Rain's feelings. But when they looked back at the foal, it still lay down. A dark gleem filled Tiponi's eyes. She nuzzled the foal and tried to let it stand, but the foal did not stand up.
At that moment silver lightning pierced through the skies and it was filled with a tremendous rumble. The two mares neighed and reared in shock, but when they looked back at the foal, it had sprang to its feet. It stood and started following its mother, so that they could return to the village safely.
And from that day she was called Taima.
