History (Archer: I am telling you exactly how Yutis told me his tale, and I will say "I" (meaning Yutis)): I was taken to the mines when I was four years old (that was the right age for a horse to start working in the mines, you see). 

They had shipped me from Irland to America by boat. When the people took me to the mine they lowered me down a shaft (like this "Here"). Cor! It was scary going down like that, one minute you in the beautiful sunlight and the next your in the dingiest, darkest place you have ever seen! 

Well, I whinnied and struggled and wriggled just to get out of the horrible straps that were wrapped around me, till at last I reached the bottom.

And what a busy sight met my scared eyes (I can also tell you that I was shaking like a leaf on a windy day!). Small little ponies, just like me were here and there, their little carts loaded with black stuff (I found out what that black stuff was).

Anyway, a man called David Henry led me to a underground stable (Like this "Here").

It was warm and there was alot of tasty straw here and there for bedding and food, but it was still very dark. In the stable there were about three other stallions like me. I was at first their teasing-stand for awhile, but we soon all became firm friends.

The next morning (I guess it was morning), David Henry took me to a large stable (but this one was filled with trucks not ponies), and he put a strang object over my head.

 Then, after fitting to me many other traps and tack, David fastened me to a huge cart loaded with about 2 tons of coal. I worked for eight hours, hauling at 30 tons of coal in tubs on the mines narrow gauge railway. David told me that all the coal that we were shifting was going to nearly all the Cavalry Forts.

"Imagine that!" he said to me, when I was having my dinner. "All this coal!"

That was the nasty moments, the better ones was when I was in the stable chatting to my horse-friends and of course, David. I was his favourite little horse and he once branded his first and second name on my soulder. David was the one who called me Yutis Maximillion, but he mostly called me his "Little Puller".

David Henry has left the mines now, I left before and sure did miss him and all my other friends!

It was okay down there, I was looked after well. But I don't think I will ever go back.
