Bio
It was a cold and windy morning, but there was straw and other horses to help keep the stable warm. One of the horses, a chestnut colored mare with a white blaze that covers most of her face, had just given birth to a healthy grey & white colt. Paz was eager to explore his new surroundings, but it took him a few minutes to find his footing. Once he did get the hang of walking on his tall and thin legs, he was up and exploring the stall, and was even trying to interact with the other horses in the neighboring stalls.

Paz was a handful as a colt, as he wanted to pull cart loads of various items like the others. While his mother often told him not to, he would manipulate the door to his stable and made  his way into the hitching area, which only resulted with the workers chasing after him. This happened a few other times in the future, so the latch oh his stable door was later modified.

On September 13th, 1905, a large fire broke out in Nome over night, destroying several businesses. Paz’s father, along with other horses, were hitched to fire engines to help assist with the fire. Paz was fast asleep, but was awoken by a spooked horse in a nearby stall. As he rose to his feet, he could see a orange, yellowish glow in the hazy air. He backed inbetween his mother's front legs for comfort. She calmly explained to him what fire was, and how dangerous it can be. The fire luckily didn’t reach them, but this event caused him to be fearful of fires. Paz spent a lot of his time with the Three Lucky Steeds (a young girl named Rosy nicknamed these horses this, as they're still in good health for their age, and are used in horse riding lessons) as his mother was being used to help remove debris.

Paz was nearly a year old when he began learning how pull carts. He was no pro yet, but he works closely with his father who often told him stories on various subjects. One story in particular that stuck in Paz’s mind was when a horse ended up stuck in mud in 1901 on the outskirts of Nome. His father wasn’t involved with the incident, but the story spread quickly among fellow horses. Later that day a young gentlemen was in need of a horse to help him with his carpentry business. The owner of Paz mentioned that he had a young stallion that he would be willing to sell. They agreed on a price and Paz was sold. Paz, whom was actually nameless up until this point, was upset that he would be leaving the only home he ever knew. With one last story from his father on how horses are often bought and sold (like him, as he was born in Seattle, WA), he said his farewell and left with Mr. Johansson. He was skittsh in his new home, but after a week or two he began to feel at home.

In 1913, a young husky/malamute mix made himself known around town. This troublesome canine was named Togo, and he often found his way into Paz’s stable whenever he broke free from the Sepppala Kennel. Paz wasn’t overly fond of the hyper pup (who liked to play with his tail), but listened to him talk about how Seppala once gave him away to live life as a pet, and how he wanted a chance at being a sled dog. Suggen (Togo's father), along with Seppala, walked into his stable with stern faces. With the help of Mr. Johansson, Seppala managed to catch Togo and put him on a short lead and went home. Togo eventually stopped bothering Paz as he grew older,  but they did see each other every now and again when Paz would be out with Mr. Johansson.

When Balto was out with his pups, the pups always wanted to go visit ol’ Paz (who is now a retired horse) at his stable. Paz loved it when the pups would come around to visit him. He would tell them stories about his days of hard work, and how Nome has changed over the years. Kodi was especially close to Paz, and he would often talk to him about how he wanted to be like his dad. Paz would tell him about how he was always tried to do things he couldn’t. But with time and practice, he became a proud work horse.

By 1928, Kodi full filled his dream and became apart of Mr. Simpson’s mail team. Paz was proud, and so was Kodi. But even though Kodi’s dream of being a sled dog came true, he was now hoping one day that he could become a lead dog. Paz encouraged him and told him with lots of practice that one day he could become a lead dog.

On May 10th, 1930, Paz was euthanized at the age of twenty-five. He had been suffering from arthritis, which led him to laying down often. As much as this was sad for everyone who knew Paz, Kodi was the most upset. From then on, every time Kodi was harnessed up to go to work, he would think of Paz and would put his best effort forward.

Um...yes, it kind of does. If he interacts with the canon characters, then he's Balto related. And being a friend of the pups and an advice giver to Kodi is definitely a canon interaction.

Personally, I think that Paz belongs here more than a good half of the canine characters people have on the site simply because, you know, he's actually related to the Balto story and all. x

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
And, to top it all off, there were horses in the real Nome in the 1920s. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that they cannot be present in the fictional animated version.

There's already been a whole discussion about allowing horse characters on BS. Paz fits well into the Balto universe while bringing something new to the mountain of wolves and dogs, and it's been decided he is allowed.
