Difference between cel and digital parts

Question :

I've been wondering this because while watching that Making of Balto documentry Karamon had uploaded on here. I saw that part of the film was digital ink and paint. But I also know the film is made with traditional cels. Since I'd seen people on here upload pictures of them across this site. But my question is how do you tell if the scene in the movie is digital or tradtional cels?

Cels were still used in the 1990's, but many were starting to lean towards the digital medium at that time. But whatever the medium, the process of taking drawings and placing them over a background remains the same.

Was this also how Disney movies like the Lion King and other 90s Disney's animated films were made like back then?

The backgrounds were painted separately in oil, then they placed the digital cels on top of them.

I am guessing that they draw the character and paint the background around the character.lol

If it is done well then hopefully you cannot tell the difference! In simple terms, if it is a background then it is hand painted either with oil or gouache paint, if it is a character then it is a hand drawn outline with digital ink and if it is foreground it is hand painted possibly on a cel. That's it really.
