as far as I know BALTO is a cross breed of SIBERIAN & MALAMUTE...I'd have to say he was black, and over time
the coat has faded to the mohogany color... taxidermy can only do so much to preserve a body. Exposure to light
and air breaks things down over time..

some images I saw online of the preserved body look black, and some look mohogany

No, Balto was 100% Siberian husky. Leonhard Seppala, the owner of Balto, only bred Siberian huskies.

I'm not sure what you mean, but none of the fading of his fur happened while he was alive. The fading is the fault of being over exposed in the Cleveland museum. And yes, Balto was a jet black husky while he was alive.

Err, Seppala was the owner of Balto and Togo, and many other dogs. Your getting Gunnar Kaasen mixed up with Leonhard Seppala. Seppala had made an extra sled team, and Kaasen was the driver.

I know Seppala did that, but that was because Balto was getting all of the fame, when in fact Togo had the longest run. As a result Seppala was upset that Balto was being given the most credit, so while Gunnar was traveling around the US, Roald Amundsen, a friend of Seppala, told him that he was needed back at work immediately. Seppala himself was actually planning his own tour of the US.

Even after that Seppala hid Balto's records, so that's why we have little information on his birth, age, parents, etc.

Well, everything else you said, Mighty, was right on target. And well said. But this last thing is a bit off. There is no direct evidence that Seppala hid Balto's records. I don't know that anyone has ever said that or that that has been revealed. What is known is that the records are not readily available. Possibly not at all. And I have speculated, in the past, that Seppala refused to make those records available out of that resentment against Balto and the attention he received and that, maybe, his descendants have done likewise out of loyalty to him. But there is no hard evidence of any of this.

Balto was a Siberian Husky, although it's stated that he's an Alaskan Malamute. I've seen a picture of him on display. The sign says that he's a Husky.

This topic is two years old, Toshika. And you've added nothing new or compelling TO it. Stop doing that.
