The Basics

I have recently lost all the pictures I had on my laptop, which means all the designs and renders I had of characters to my Balto family tree are now gone. Because I am so upset that I lost all my hard work, I am hoping that I can get some help from all you members of Animation Source!

The idea I had comes from my previous contest experience where people always ask the same question: if I make a character, do I have to keep it? Well, the answer for this question here is no. Actually, thats kind of the point. Of course, if you really fall in love with a character, I wouldn't mind at all if you want to keep it. But those of you who just like to create a story and design for a character without committing to a new character, I will gladly keep this new character (with credit given where its due, of course).

You can always keep any character(s) that you create, but this wouldn't be a contest without prizes! Anyone who's character I chose to be part of my Balto tree will be able to request two renders or request a character with full bio and design.

History: Alister had a good pup hood, like all others. He went early out in his life to find a new place to stay, instead of staying with his parents. He found the town of Nome, and decided to stick around.

A few weeks later, while exploring his new home, Alister bumbed into a scraggy old dog, rummaging through the trash. Being himself, he acted coradily and introduced himself. He learned the other dogs name, and eventually they managed to strike up a long conversation. Days later, they found themselves to be very close friends.
Personality:Alister is nice, and out there. He doesn't like to be a glory hound, but he likes to be a clown, throw some jokes, and make people smile. Alister isn't one to have a split personality, and rarely is mean. He likes to meet new people, but can shy away if they don't like the joke, or, make fun of him.

I know! I was so surprised no one was entering! I've been meaning to enter for a while but just never had the time. Anywhos, I've been able to make Alister. I'll work on a few others later. And on another note... I am not personally proud of the history length. It could be way longer. DX

Personality:

Lean, only as independent as he needs to be. As a pup, Alister was very dependent on his brother. This made for a lot of problems growing up, and when Alister became a teenager he realized just how messed up he had made himself. He quickly got out of the rut and became his own canine. He’s a sweet guy, something his appearance often never captures. He takes insults to heart, though, and it’s rare of him to fight back. Because of the way he ‘fixed’ his old problem of dependency, Alister often confides in only himself. He has trouble trusting other dogs. So, by fixing his old habit, he created another bad one. When other dogs attempt to cheer him up, most of the time he feels inclined to snap at them. Though he’s clever enough to know that it isn’t a good idea.

He’s willing to open his heart up to a few special individuals, but it takes a lot for him to feel he can trust you. If someone were to mess with his family, he wouldn’t care who you were or what trust he had for you. He’d defend his brother until the very end, even though he’s slightly younger. He feels he has a responsibility to his brother now that he can work on his own. He would give his life for Alan. And he feels that Alan would do the same. He’s mostly quiet, but he’s not afraid to speak. If he feels he needs to, he will command the attention of an entire room. He may be a lot of things you’d consider insecure, but shy is not one of his traits.

History:

Alister was born to a breeder in the small town of Bethel, Alaska. He enjoyed his life there, but when he was only six months old he was sold to a musher named Gary Wilder. He was joined with his brother, Alan, so Alister decided it wasn’t all bad. It was a new experience, though, so for a half year old puppy it was slightly terrifying however exciting all at once. He found comfort in his brother, Alan. Because of this, Alister began to develop an unhealthy dependency on Alan.

Soon after their arrival at the new home of Gary Wilder, Alister and his brother began training into a potential championship team with their father figure, Matthias. When the pups became of an adult age, or the right age to finally race right, their owner Gary traveled with them to Nome, Alaska a few cities over. There he continued their training, which became a lot more vigorous as time went by.

Eventually, Alister began to feel he was overshadowed by his brother way too often. Their father figure, Matthias continued to pick Alan when it came to choice, and even the town had only heard of his brother. Because of all this, Alister started to feel annoyed anytime his brother would show. He began to see his brother as arrogant and way too full of himself for his own good. Alister continued to feel this way until Alan became more concerned with his rival, Cooper. After which, his brother was moved to another team. At first, Alister felt relieved. However as time progressed, the husky began to feel bad for ever being angry at his brother.

After all, it wasn’t Alan’s fault that others preferred him over Alister. After this realization, Alister worked on a few things. He worked at becoming closer to his brother, even though they were on separate teams now. He also worked on trying to be the next to lead dog. Or at least seem worth something in Matthias’ eyes. This became determination, and through that he was able to run and try to succeed at his goals.

Name: Sadie
Gender: Female

Breed: Springer Spaniel x Entlebucher Mountain Dog x Icelandic Sheepdog

Personality:

Kind, determined, and a lover at heart, Sadie is the type of dog that would accept anyone into her world though at the same time would assert her ground when it comes to things she cares about. She is persistent in everything she does and never gives up no matter how badly the odds are stacked against her. She always strives to complete her goals and takes no insult truly to heart. She does have a slight temper, but it’s nothing that she can’t keep under control. Sadie could be considered as protective over the ones she loves, though she isn’t the type to hover. She is trustworthy and usually the first dog that others turn to when they have no one who cares.

She’s nice to strangers and welcomes all with open paws. She is slightly adventurous, but not all that brave. Her biggest flaw would probably be that she trusts way too much than she should. In believing everyone has a kind heart, she misjudges those who don’t, and ends up getting hurt because of it. And although insults don’t cross her, being betrayed does and this tends to affect her overall mood. It’s easy to tell if she’s feeling unhappy since she’s usually very cheerful.

History:

Most of Sadie’s life, she’s lived either in the pound or on the streets. She’s never known a real human home, but longs for the safety and comfort of warm hands. She was born in the pound to a dog that had been recently captured and put in a cell. The puppies were a surprise so, as a result, she was the only one who really survived. The staff had no knowledge of the puppies until it was too late for the others. And so, Sadie was the only living pup of her litter.

Her mother was extremely young and had almost no idea how to take care of Sadie. Though the older dog knew that her puppy stood a chance of getting out, and she also knew what a horrible place the pound was. She never wanted her daughter to be adopted by a human, even though she knew that was Sadie’s best chance of getting out considering she was a puppy. She wanted her to escape and live life on the streets, because despite the dangers, she knew that was safer than the pound or a human home. Humans couldn’t be trusted, and the pound was a death sentence. But Sadie’s mother never got the chance to engrave this into the pup’s head and so, Sadie’s ideas of humans and trust became entirely different.

Sadie’s mother gave her a plan, and it was pretty simple to follow through. Since she was such a small pup, evidentially the runt of her litter, she was just tiny enough to squeeze through the gaps in the gate. Once she did so, she bid her mother a long and tearful farewell, and sneaked out of the pound with ease due to her size. She went unnoticed and the next day when she was gone, the staff was baffled. Most didn’t notice she was gone at all, though, so Sadie was home free.

She spent her days getting to know life on the streets. One day, when she was older and almost full grown, Sadie got caught in an accident. While taking a walk around town, she somehow managed to clip a fence. Her tail got caught in it and she couldn’t break free. She twitched and moved around so much that blood became an evident factor. Her tail began to burn after a long period of time, and she howled out in an attempt for someone to hear and aid her.

Someone did come to her rescue. One of the town’s mushers saw her in distress and managed to get her tail unhooked from the fence. However, her tail was broken and almost unrecognizable. The musher took her to the veterinarian nearby and she managed to make it through. Though when she woke up from the surgery, her tail was gone. It was docked because the doctors couldn’t save it. At first Sadie was devastated, but after a few days she quickly got over it. It wasn’t a big deal, she decided.

A long while later, Sadie came across a handsome male who went by the name of Cooper. She was awestruck the moment she saw him, and because of the fact she is persistent, she continued trying for his love. They became great friends, and Sadie was fine with that. Though she always longed for them to be something more. Her dreams were put on break because Cooper was falling for the town’s popular female, Delilah. Delilah was claimed already by Alan who was Cooper’s rival. And this caused Cooper to want her even more. At first Sadie was disappointed, but it wasn’t a big loss. She could always still try.

When Cooper jumped into a race with Alan for a spot on the new championship team, Sadie was on the sidelines cheering for him. He was doing great until he was tripped by a friend of Alan’s named Eric. Sadie ran to Cooper’s side when he attempted to follow his father, Balto’s, footsteps. He fell through the ice and was struggling to get out as Alan won the race. Though when Sadie reached him, he had already pulled himself out and seemed fine enough.

After the race and the fight with Cooper that ensued, Sadie didn’t see much of him anymore. He seemed to just… disappear. This saddened Sadie, and she became gloomy because of it. Many noticed her down mood, but she never commented on it. Usually she was open about her feelings, but for some reason she felt this was something she needed to keep secret. Eventually Cooper found her again, and after an apologetic conversation and many exchanges of sorry, they end up laughing with each other again. Over the next month or two, she and Cooper finally became mates.

And Sadie hasn’t seemed sad since then.

Name: Lewis
Gender: Male
Age: Depends
Breed: Siberian Husky

Personality:

Trusting and friendly, Lewis is a rare type of male who doesn’t keep secrets and seems open a lot of the time. Judging by just his looks, one could say he has a good sense of character and would be an awesome friend. He understands others immensely, often feeling how they do whether their emotions emit sadness, contentment, anger, or something else entirely. He’s an ‘okay’ on the social scale. He’s not a talkative dog, however he doesn’t feel shy in approaching others.

Some would call him a poet. At times, Lewis can be romantic and sleek in movement. He’ll do anything for the ones he loves even if it means having to do something he knows he will ultimately regret. Although his main flaw would ultimately have to be his laid pack personality. Considering his unique ability to tune into the feelings of others, Lewis will often find himself immersed in feelings he would rather not have. His heart is too big to turn down someone if they ask him for help, so he often endures the pain he receives himself to provide a favor.

There is room for others to take advantage of him, as unlikely as it would seem. He’s lithe and bold looking, though not as strong as he might appear at first. His mass is enough to keep anyone from trying to mess with him in the physical form, but mentally he’s extremely vulnerable.

History:

Lewis was born in Fairbanks, Alaska in a breeding store of all places. His mother and father had had a litter of defected puppies, so a lot of them were given up for low prices when they came of age. Lewis never was sure who exactly they went to, but he was sure they had to have been good homes after romping around and finding a pup named Lucy. She was a Labrador and Husky mix. Apparently, her father had snuck in or some business like that and had had a litter with her mother.

The resulting litter, including Lucy, was thankfully taken in by the owner along with her father. This showed Lewis that the owner must have been a nice person, thank goodness. Therefore, Lewis found his first example of kindness and showing a good act. This is most likely where his own good heart grew from, considering he was so impressionable as a pup. He grew to know Lucy a lot better than he initially had thought he would, and the two became inseparable friends.

When the two pups were older, Lewis was sad to see Lucy turn herself out onto the streets. He would have gone with her, though he was stuck in training to be a sled dog. Being a husky, he was pretty much forced into it, and Lewis wasn’t really too ecstatic about doing something he wasn’t interested in. Eventually, the husky found himself running off to join his friend. From there, Lucy taught him how to live on the streets.

After living together for a few years on the streets, Lucy had met a new dog named Amber. When Lewis was introduced to this female, he was taken aback at her beauty. He had fallen for her almost immediately, wanting to win her affection from then on. He was hopelessly determined. After trying for some time, Lucy had come to him and had a heart to heart conversation. She described talking to Amber the night before, and talked Lewis easily into becoming her mate. The rest went smoothly after that.

Amber wanted to visit her family a bit after that, asking Lewis to come along with her. Lewis immediately answered yes, agreeing to accompany his mate wherever she wished to go. He told Lucy he would be back soon, however not too long after the couple had arrived in Nome, Alaska, Amber went into labor, bearing the litter of pups she had been pregnant with for weeks now.

Kodi, Amber’s brother, relayed the message while on a mail run to Lucy, and while Lucy had wanted to come see them, Kodi had suggested that she stay there since it would be tough to get the couple, their pups, and Lucy all back to Fairbanks on one trip. When the couple and their pups finally made it back to Fairbanks, they learned that Lucy was now mates with Amber’s older brother, Kodi, and Lewis was extremely glad for her.

Many hugs went around when Amber, Lewis, and their pups finally returned, and soon Lewis found out that his best friend was pregnant as well. He was gladly expecting the pups, hoping that the next generations could become as good of friends as Lucy and Lewis were.

Name: Roger [Nicknamed ‘Rouge’]
Gender: Male
Age: Depends
Breed: Dalmatian x American White Shepherd x Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Personality:

Roger is agile and able to see the details that a lot of dogs couldn’t, no matter how much he doesn’t look it. He was born with a defect of unusually colored yellow eyes, and although it wasn’t physically harmful towards him, it made everyone he came in contact with at least somewhat afraid of his appearance. Roger was always a friendly dog, though. He just tended to look mean, and the fact that he was a bit of a rebel didn’t really help his reputation.

Where he grew up, Roger could have turned out an entirely different way, but for some reason he seemed to be born rebellious. He grew to be the exact opposite. He received the nickname Rogue, the fun loving, do whatever he wanted street mutt. Roger’s biggest asset, and yet his largest problem as well, is his ego. Although he doesn’t hurt anyone and isn’t a bully, he doesn’t give a wag what others think of him, and this causes controversy at times. He loves to have a good time and is willing to get in trouble to do it.

He can be sincerely loyal if he feels you deserve it, and so far Cooper is the only one that Roger seemed obliged to look out for besides himself. So overall, Roger is a friendly dog who just loves to have a good time. He is smarter and more agile than a lot of canines give him credit for, and usually just comes off as a rebel because of his joking aura. His nickname Rouge represents him completely, as most strangers who don’t know his real name usually call him by.

History:

Roger was a mill puppy, the result of inbreeding. His parents were lost in the sea of canines, and he never knew most of his brothers and sisters. The ones he did, he wasn’t sure he wanted to. A lot of the dogs here were depressed, anxious, or just plain psycho. It was a bad environment for a puppy his age, but it couldn’t be helped. The man who kept the place was in it for greed and that was about it. He didn’t care one bit for the dogs, although that worked to Roger’s advantage eventually.

Being so young and resentful towards the place he belonged, Roger randomly bumped up against the cage using the small room he was allowed to roam. Fortunately, the owner of the huge ranch wasn’t exactly the brightest bulb in the box, and so he wasn’t vigilant at all. This gave Roger a chance to develop his own vision. Given strange yellow eyes as a result of his own defect, although not exactly physically disabling, a lot of the dogs trembled next to him, fearing his gaze for some reason.

It just wasn’t natural for a dog to have those eyes, and yet Roger used them to aid his escape. He would watch every day and take not one step forward unless the men who checked up on them left. After that, he would bang his body against the cold metal and slip in his own messes from taking a ‘running start’. The cages were absolutely filthy, and soon Roger became sick because of it. Coughing like mad and practically close to giving up, Roger was beginning to lose hope.

When he turned eight months old, one of the workers pushed his cage open and seared some kind of contraption into his skin. He yelped and cried out as loud as he knew how, but his voice was hoarse and came out in cracks. Roger endured the pain for as long as it lasted, but as soon as the guy threw him down, he wearily noticed an opportunity. He would have missed it too, had it not been by chance he saw the gap. He bolted out, stumbling from the jump, and he received a bonus for knocking down the human on his way out. The dogs who had been in his cage followed him stupidly. Most of them had been way too far gone to realize the freedom they had just earned: they had been here too long.

Roger, however, knew exactly what it meant, and he catapulted himself all the way out of there. After he was a few miles away, he wheezed. Out of breath due to his raging yet somehow still minor illness, the almost yearling found his way to a truck that was headed across the states, hopefully somewhere far away. It was a shipping truck, so it held a lot of promise. Saying goodbye to the other dogs who had managed to escape along with him, Roger had earned a new nickname. He carried it with him for three days the truck traveled, all the way to Nome, Alaska. The mail guy who came to drop off some fishing supplies went to the back to gather some boxes. This was his last stop until he had to go back around and start trips all over again to other parts of America, and so the boxes were dwindling.

Roger, still loving his new nickname, Rouge, had no other objects to hide behind. So this time, when the mail guy came to get him out, he jumped beside him and ran before he got caught. Taking in this new place, the first thought that had hit him was that it was freezing cold. He could get used to it, he decided, and this fact was confirmed when he met a dog named Cooper. He and the wolf-dog became great friends, and Roger loved hanging out with him. The other dog didn’t even seem to mind Rouge’s strange eyes.

However, his new friend had dreams that wouldn’t stop him from doing what he wished. Roger began to notice steadily that Cooper was embedded deeply in a feud with Alan, the main male dog of the town. Or the most popular, at least. He was in constant rivalry with him, not just because of the races but also because of the beautiful Delilah. They were both determined to win her affections and racing was just a part of their war.

One day, while taking a stroll through the small town, Roger saw Cooper getting ready to enter a race. It just so happened that it was the same race that Alan wanted to win so badly. Roger was excited for his friend. Despite the fact he should have been worried, Rouge just wasn’t the type to have concern. He looked at the bright, fun side of things. He didn’t really care about being so gloomy all the time. He went to go get Cooper’s relatives and friends, including Sadie, Jenna, Jared, and a few others. They seemed shocked when he told them the news, though.

With a tilted head, he returned. Cooper ended up losing the race because of a stupid dog tripping him. Rouge had seen it, and it peeved him off, though there wasn’t much he could do about it, so he leave it be for the most part. However, whenever he came in contact with the dog, Eric, or his buddy Alan, Roger was sure to send a nasty look or a growl their way. They seemed almost shocked by it, but Roger didn’t really care what they thought. He hoped his defect, his eyes, and his number scared them. Since they seemed to make every other dog weary besides his best bud, Cooper.

Roger saw Cooper go through a lot of other hardships over the next few weeks and months, and saw him through in each and every single problem. He had his back. Though a rebel Roger may look, he is exceedingly and surprisingly loyal, though it seems that he is only that way towards Cooper. Most dogs just find it another strange quality about Roger, whom most strangers came to call ‘Rouge’ if they didn’t know his real name.
